See I have a higher expectation than this. Crosby, Ovechkin, Stamkos, Tavares, Kane, Seguin and Benn. Giroux in my opinion has reached these standards but could either bounce back or decline further. I don't want just a Cup contender. I want a Hart contender, Norris contender, Selke contender and a Vezina contender every year. - roenick97
having a hart, norris, selke, and vezina contender on a team that just two seasons ago didnt qualify for the playoffs, is gonna be hard. only a handful of teams in the league right now have that type of pedigree. lets start with getting over the "being on the bubble every year" tier first
Dryden's WSJ column is no more ridiculous than the things he wrote in "The Game". He's a brilliant guy with seeming disdain for those he sees as less intelligent than himself, and he may well be on the Asperger's spectrum, as others have suggested. It's his opinion, nothing more and it comes off as little more than sour grapes.
Anyhow, I don't really care about his opinions or what he writes.

I'm conflicted about Dryden. So often I'm tempted to write him off as a complete and utter jackwagon, and then there'll be something touching and sincere from him like the Jean Beliveau eulogy, and I'll reconsider.
But yes... Jackwagonnery... too much of it and too often for my tastes.

He sees himself as some sort of white knight who saved hockey from the evil Philistines from Philly. Great goalie, but Jesus.

I never liked the Game, but give Home Game a try.
Much better. - Atomic Wedgie
Is this a different Home Game than the one by Bret Boone? Because I have that one and havent gotten around to reading it.
Oh, and as long as we're on the subject of books. I thoroughly enjoyed BoB McKenzie's "Hockey Confidential". The Chapter on Don and Tim Cherry was most excellent, and there was a chapter with a wonderful explanation of the genesis of #fancystats as well.
Sadly, I can't seem to find a decent copy (its very out of print) of McKenzie's "Confessions of a (Crazy) Hockey Dad."

Dryden got play behind best defense corps in my lifetime...and for my money the best team, as good as those Oilers teams were they never lost just 9 games in a season. I always felt he was a product of that defense.
What Bill didn't say about that 75-76 Flyers team was Clarke was hurt in that finals but played. I think he did permanent damage that affected his play going forward. His numbers declined every year, except 82-83.

hmmm...i don't recall ever hearing mac say that. good enough for me though. - hammarby31
I remember one incident clearly.. it was a saturday show during football season and some kid called in and got into an argument with Ray Didinger and called him a fraud. Sometime after the call, Mac was teasing Ray about it and then added something to the effect of "well... that kid is a bit of a jackwagon"

Even better! I also see mention of a book titled "The Last Season" and referred to as the best hockey novel ever written. Now I have two more books to look out for. Thank you!
