So my question is....
Is Cam Fowler not an upgrade? |

Interesting as I have also liked leivo but I think wedgewood is going to be the better player (not that pieces wouldn't or couldn't be included on both sides or that either player will be stars). - blizzzard
Between wedgewood and kinkaid, I feel like there is a trade with the Leafs and Devils to be made. |

What is Fowler worth then?
Would he not be a key piece as a top 2 D? |

Fowler for JVR straight up would be wise.
Larsson fetched Hall.
D don't come cheap.
Building from the goal out would move the rebuild along faster.
Also fits LL's MO. - Nighthawk
Lou also doesn't overpay in trades.
Probably better off waiting until closer to the expansion draft to see if prices for dmen come down.

I gave you an answer, it is not an upgrade. I'll be more specific then:
Name the LW's in the NHL that are irrefutably better than JVR
Now Name the d-man that are irrefutably better than Fowler.
One list is much longer than the other and will give your desired specific response.

My answer is...
Reilly is your only top 2 D.
None in the system.
Keep JVR is fine. Hall is better.
Fowler is as advertised at a good contract also.
Give to get or stand pat cuz top D don't grow on trees. |

Not a trade a good GM makes. |

I will start by saying I do NOT want to trade JVR. However, I do think we really need a partner for Reilly now...not 4 years from now.
So, does anyone think that if for some reason we get the Vesey kid that then JVR for Fowler, or maybe Trouba, makes sense? |

Getting a Fowler or Trouba makes sense yes.
Idk if Troubas contract demands make sense though.
Years of solid D will go farther.
Vesey has proven nothing yet but allows flexibility.
Wouldn't ordain him just yet. |

Building from the goal out is one of those catchphrases that really doesn't mean much. Most often rebuilding teams with very high picks actually go for the top centre and build back.
More importantly though, there's no need to move anything along faster. Patience. |

Why does everyone want to trade JVR? He is our only 'bonafide' 1st line player. |

Top C drafted.
Top D ala goal out is no catchphrase.
Don't have them u don't go far.
Top 2 D always have been in demand along with a 1C. |

Your answer is nonsense - the correct response would be that there are perhaps 12 to 16 LW in the NHL that could be considered better than JVR.
In contrast there are likely 40 d-man plus that are superior to Fowler.

Yeah I can't figure that one out either. People seem to think that they just need to use JVR to plug in a dman and bingo bango the rebuild is complete. Seem to forget Matthews, Marner and Nylander are all rookies. |

Sure, but building from the back end out is meaningless in practice. It's the kind of thing Burke and Nonis like to say. In reality teams get the best players they can and then try to get more good players. It doesn't sound catchy, but it's true. |

Keeping JVR is fine.
Trading him for a top D is only a discussion not an answer to complete the rebuild.
Much work to do yet. |

because after Rielly we have no legitimate top-4 D, and not much that looks exciting in the system, whereas we have a number of young talented forwards (even if only 1 or 2 all-stars).
Nighthawk is not trolling. We may not agree with his opinion but it really isn't a troll and he is right about the market for D. |
