I totally agree with you. We would need a 1-2 dman and JVR isn't going to get you that without a big addition in trade. Not sayin JVR isn't any good but not equal value for a top dman

We need jvr. Keep him for now. So simple.

Not possible.

Anythings possible. See Mike Richards.

Plus it'll give Beatle_John something to moan about.

I agree at least for this year. See how he does with the young guys in the lineup. If he's performing work at resigning him long term next summer. A first line of jvr Matthews marner/nylander could be solid in a few years.

We've never seen someone grieve a buyout, so we don't know what is and isn't possible

After finishing his first stint in the NHL, Nylander returned to the AHL and didn’t look himself during the Marlies‘ Calder Cup bid. Overall, he played with a lack of energy and didn’t show the determination he displayed in the NHL under Babcock. Rich Clune noted on Leafs Lunch that he was sick the entire playoffs and “wasn’t himself”; that seems to line up with what many of us saw watching from home.

The NHL and sports in general is governed in such a way that anything is possible. They don't always follow the 'rules'. LL and BS will have some convincing to do if they're going to avoid that cap hit.

I believe Nylander said he had mono. Probably a injury from the tinder game.

I gave you an answer, it is not an upgrade. I'll be more specific then:

Name the LW's in the NHL that are irrefutably better than JVR

Now Name the d-man that are irrefutably better than Fowler.

One list is much longer than the other and will give your desired specific response.

- winsix

nicely done.

I imagine theyll still face a cap hit (as they would in a regular buyout)

I will start by saying I do NOT want to trade JVR. However, I do think we really need a partner for Reilly now...not 4 years from now.

So, does anyone think that if for some reason we get the Vesey kid that then JVR for Fowler, or maybe Trouba, makes sense?

Keeping JVR is fine.
Trading him for a top D is only a discussion not an answer to complete the rebuild.
Much work to do yet.

did you use a Yoda voice for that part?

and I concur.

Agreed. If Matthews Nylander and Marner look like Legitimate NHLers and a couple of the scondary guys like Hyman Leivo or Brown can transition then we can look at trading offensive for defense. Keep JVR to keep some pressure off the young guys and wait for teams to make pre expansion trades.

Leafs have a ton of prospects who could turn into NHLers. Not every good nhl player starts out as a highly touted top 10 picks. Any of soshnikov Bracco timashov Johnson brown could into something. They're all putting up good numbers in their respective leagues. Same with some d prospects. Also have picks to trade when it comes down to it.

I sill think kadri might be the better option than jvr to trade for D. That's counting on nylander and Matthews becoming top 2 centers. Then we still have jvr and marner as top 6 wingers. We still have Bozak, holland, laich to help transition the kids. Which isn't too appealing but for another season of pain Wtf.

Edit you don't have to trade for a top 2 dman. A lot of the number 2's even number 1s in the league are mid round draft picks. Let the kids develop first.

Dermott has had an equally if not more impressive 19 year old year than Morgan rielly did.

Didn't you recently propose Tanev, Burrows and a pick for Laine, Trouba and a pick...?

I see your reasoning. If it were up to me (which is not the case) I wouldn't trade him unless it was an overpayment that a: would make the team better now b: would make the team better in the future and c: give cap relief.

I don't think any GM would fulfill those three criteria with any offer.

Tanev Burrows 1st for Laine Trouba Enstrom retain 1m yes
I know its dreaming lol That 1st is more than offers here btw.
Unless its no big trades r needed then fine.

As for above Tanev is top 2 D & i'd say we have no others.
Still not offering possibles in the AHL & touting them as fetching a top 2 D.

Well, the Vancouver side of the offer might get you into a conversation about Laine.

But probably not.

because after Rielly we have no legitimate top-4 D, and not much that looks exciting in the system, whereas we have a number of young talented forwards (even if only 1 or 2 all-stars).

Nighthawk is not trolling. We may not agree with his opinion but it really isn't a troll and he is right about the market for D.
