Seriously though, there shouldn't be a second thought about making McDavid the captain. If Crosby did it, so can this kid who might be even better than Sid when its all said and done. That type of HoF talent needs to be in the leadership group of your team, and quite honestly should be the captain all things being equal. That fact that we're talking about Edmonton where there's no current leadership infrastructure in place makes all the more clear cut. If Hall wasn't traded there'd be an argument, but since he's gone there's not.

Putting the fate of the franchise on the back of a 19 year old and asking him develop a new culture ? That basically happened the day he became an Oiler so they may as well make it official and slap the C on him. The only other logical choice would be Hendricks, then he can hand it over to McDavid in a year or two.

So what's your point? Crosby was getting leadership coaching from Mario so he was batting at a handicap? Sure, hanging out with Mario day in and day out helps, but a kid like McDavid has the resources to reach out to the game's greats if he ever needs pointers. That's the distinct advantage of the Old Boys' culture of the NHL.

He's no Lemieux, but McDavid was living with the de facto leader of the Oilers last year in Hall. That's a very above average tutor. It wasn't like Toews was living with Chelios or Savard when he inherited the captaincy of a previously pathetic, rebuilding franchise like Crosby did before him (I actually don't know this to be fact so if Toews roomed with Savard feel free to flag this post lol). Guys that are cut from that special cloth can step in and be leaders in any environment at any age regardless who's couch they're sleeping on.

Landeskog, Crosby, Toews, Lecavalier, and Yzerman all became captains at very young ages. McDavid should be captain.

They did that last year. Both Chiarelli and McLellan have said there will be a captain this year. CmD appears inevitable, but there have been rumblings made about Lucic or Eberle. By season's end last year it was pretty obvious who was leading the team on the ice and more than one player has already reffered to McDavid as 'our leader'. They could go with someone else, but it's McDavid's team.

It would never be Eberle. You need someone that can lead by example to be your captain. Not someone that doesn't backcheck, doesn't try if the puck isn't on his stick, and disappears for large periods of time. (frank) that gap toothed female dog!!!
