I have seen a few times on here the comments There are no Shortcuts. I am not debating against any one person in particular because it has been said by a sizeable number of posters on here.
That statement is wrong. There are many many shortcuts and the more you find the better. To a point.
Example we could wait until 2012 first round Brendan Gaunce develops into a top 9 left winger or we can upgrade and trade for 2011 first round pick sven Baertschi.
We could wait and see if Cody Hodgson first round pick would turn into a top 3 Center or we could trade for a top three Brandon Sutter.
We could hope one day McNally turns into a useful NHLer or we could trade for Gudbranson .
Any time you can upgrade and not give up the farm a GM should do it.
Not every draft pick will work out. Not every trade will work out. The teams that are usually successful most time have a GM that wheels n Deals.
So yes there are shortcuts otherwise our roster would still have McNally Jennings Hodgson Grabner and Schroeder, and I don't see that as a cup winning lineup - VANTEL
"We're developing the next core of your #Canucks right now. No shortcut here." - Trevor Linden
“I knew when I signed up where our team was at. There are no shortcuts in this business. You have to do things the right way. And to do things the right way, you have to draft well, you have to develop well and you have to establish your next group of core players.” - Jim Benning

He can say it all he wants . His team has been one of the most active teams in trading and regular UFA user also.
Baghdad Bob also told us there were no Americans in Iraq and I didn't believe him either. |

The only example I can think of right now that fits your narrative is Tampa trading for Ben Bishop. They were fresh off of a Eastern Conference finals but his addition and subsequent development has been a big part of their success.
LA was able to add Richards and Carter to their team to put them in contender status.
Chicago added Hossa.
Pitsburgh traded for Kessel
Boston traded for Horton.
Those players were elite when they were acquired though.

If not for the quick fixes you love he probably would be playing for the Canucks ....yes he is good ...imagine hank him and bo this year as your 1-3C - Redmile247
Have you seen the new lottery format? no gurantees. Regardless, Matthews is apparently a parasite in the locker room |

You're right. If you can upgrade without giving up significant assets, you can rebuild faster. But that means you have to get more than you give in every trade which means you have to be smarter than all the other GMs or at least find a couple you can fleece on a regular basis. I don't think that's realistic over the long term.
What you can do is acquire lots of picks and prospects that allow you to buy a quicker rebuild while keeping the capacity to develop players to keep the process going. |

I know weird right, almost like they are saying one thing to try to appease fans and doing another to try and appease ownership.

There is no example quantity beats quality.
3 parts r needed...
Drafting
Trading
Wise UFA signings.
Working the fringes accomplishes nothing IMO. |

Dealing for Gudbranson was hardly a shortcut, they weakened their center position and future to strengthen their defence from a physical standpoint….someone needs to tell me how taking five dollars out of your left pocket and putting it in your right pocket strengthens your financial situation?
Every once and awhile you win on a deal, like Dallas did with Seguin, that's a definite shortcut, but those are few and far between. |

Simple...
Traded easily replaced potential for a known Quantity.
D r harder to come by. Good value IMO.
Who wants to watch us get shoved around in our own division?
About time we had some good snarl on the team.
No brainer EG was needed & the price was right. |

We can afford to develop Oily.
He would easily be on an AHL roster in the NHL.

I can see sam gagner getting signed here IF we intend on moving someone out, both for the log jammed roster spot and the cap space. Capfriendly lists canucks as having 2.7M space....wasnt gagner earning 4.5-5M last contract?
Personally I think Id rather have a banging winger that can score a la 2011 torres.
not sure who thatd be these days thats still available - SMBDragon
Gagner is a solid 40 pt guy when he is healthy the problem is that he has only ever played one full season…ever. Even at a bargain Gagner would probably only play 40-50 games if that…can't risk it. |

Not a single UFA left wirth getting for us IMO.
Leafs can sign a few for future TDL moves for more draft darts.
