Higher ceiling based on what ? Similar junior numbers ...crouse had better P/G virtanen had more points ....crouse was better as a Canadian world junior ... Virtanen is further along in development but that deal is not a bad thought really - Redmile247
I have never been impressed watching Crouse. He strikes me as a guy who excelled in junior due to his size and not his skill level. Virtanen has exceptional skating, great size and a good shot. In my opinion, he probably ends up a solid, versatile second line winger (limited due to his hockey sense) while Crouse is a bottom 6 option. Again, hard to predict this early in their careers, I am just not high on Crouse. |

At first thought of the proposal, I wanted to say yes because I liked the offensive potential that Crouse showed at WJC (admittedly the only time I've really seen him), then Don's post made me pause and reconsider. It would be an interesting trade.
In my unprofessional opinion, I think JV could have the higher potential because I think he has grown up less focused on offense, always being involved in physical play and some shenanigans and not always looking to be a scorer/skilled guy. I see Crouse as the offensive minded one thats been working on it, so he may already be showing close to his potential. If JV can find those soft hands (a la prime Bertuzzi) then he could be a lot more dangerous, but he could just as easily pan out as a bottom six grinder |

So you think crouse is more offensive minded but JV could be better if he finds something he doesn't have ?
That seems counter to Dons post doesn't it ? |

No I believe JV has offensive skill and talent, but I agree with Don that his hockey sense isnt the greatest, so he doesnt use it as effectively as he could. I dont think he has put it all together yet, but could be a dangerous finisher if he does.
Crouse, I see as one who has spent time working on his soft hands and making offensive plays. I think you've got a clearer idea of what Crouse will be because of it. |

Benning has been attrocious. However, I think there's maybe a bit more going on...
When he took over, our team was clearly headed nowhere but down. Yet, our ownership is both meddling and delusional. So, they couldn't see it and wanted to stay competitive.
Benning knew he wasn't going to be competitive, so he secretly tried to tank his team. He systematically got rid of all our goal-scorers - and replaced them with players who have no offensive instincts whatsoever. Benning didn't want goals. He wanted us to lose, so that ownership would smarten up and we could finally re-build. And, at the very least, he'd get to build his team from the bottom up. He could get rid of anyone he didn't like, and not have to worry about getting equal-value back for them.
Unfortunately, being the worst team in the league wasn't enough to pop our ownership out of their delusion and they still think we can win now (and now Benning's stuck with this weird team he can't really do anything with, who can't score to save their lives).
It's going to be a painful next few years... - stringerbell

Yeah, Kesler, Garrison, Bieksa, Kassian, Bonino & Shink were really lighting up the scoreboard.
So why did he sign Vrbata? |

When contrasted against the return (i.e Vey, Sutter, Sbisa, Prust and Granlund) it's not that far-fetched lol. |

Vrbata? - A_SteamingLombardi
I liked the signing, but picking up a second tier, aging perimeter UFA (even when he was knocking back 30ish goal seasons) did little to address the underlying issues on offense. |

the point that asl made was that benning was not employing a stealth tank. his moves (especially vrbata) don't reflect a desire to tank.
vrbata came in and scored 30. that was what benning expected and the player delivered in the first year.
having some made up theory that benning was trying to tank from the start against the wishes of ownership is simply ludicrous, fan fiction. |

Since people always talk about the same sort of proposals..
What would peoples thoughts be on trading JV for Lawson Crouse??
With Eriksson, Rodin, Hansen, Boeser, Lockwood and JV all on the right and our LW is basically Sedin, Sven and Etem.
Crouse not as fast as JV but much bigger. The trade would basically be just for positional need. - mauryballstein
Clearly, throughout the years, the Panthers have been the Canucks trade-booty call. Can anyone think of a team that the Canucks haven't traded with or had a waiver wire transaction with in the past 10 years? |
