Chasing the playoffs is fine, but the big picture should be on the long term development of guys like JV and Juolevi.
Realistically this team isn't ready to make noise in the post season. I'd rather see the kids dominating at lower levels until they have rounded out their game 100% - Vanoxy
yeah, i don't want to see JV with the big club until he shows some day in, day out consistency in the 'A' and realizes, riding the bus isn't a lot of fun. if he doesn't shape up, then ship em' out of town like his buddy McCann... |

It's more about who Van could lose - manvanfan
I've looked at the list of players that would be exposed and I'm not concerned, the best one is Sbisa and losing his cap hit would be a benefit. Every team will lose a player and thanks to Mike Gillis we don't have any players worth protecting.

I don't quite understand the hate for him right now. Yeah he makes quite a bit but it's not as if he dissapeared. He had 22 points. - manvanfan
Nobody hates Burrows, he WAS a great Canuck. People hate his salary and current level of play. If there is a way to get rid of him they should. Bring him back next year in a coaching capacity in the organization |

I'm going to take a 'wait and see' approach, before making any decisions about who deserves to play this year.
Burrows could surprise, JV could suck. |

I don't think Cloutier was a bad goalie, I know you said not the greatest, and if he was still in his prime, I think he'd have a job. One big gaff really tarnished his reputation and he had some injury issues.
iirc, Cloutier was the first Canuck goalie to put together 3 consecutive 30 plus win seasons. That is either a good indication of Cloutier's ability or the woeful teams and goalies before him.
sorry, didn't mean to pick, bored. - hillbillydeluxe
That bum knee really did him in. He was never the same goalie after the injury. |

there are some people on here who like to call others names or swear at them, but the moment you give em' some back they run to their momerator and turn you in and then tell everyone about it like some 5 year old... i wouldn't take being called 'stupid' personally.
not saying that's what happened here. just sharing an anecdote. - kaptaan

I wasn't calling you stupid, it was said more in jest than anything, just hard to articulate emotion on a keyboard. In my opinion the ideology that Cloutier would be a bad coach simply because he wasn't the greatest player is preposturous! I said, as a general statement, "that's stupid", not, you're stupid. I also said, "you can't fix stupid", which was said in jest. I respect your opinion along with everyone else's.
I guess I can get frustrated at the 'train-of-thought' that you're a bad player so you're a bad coach. Most good coaches I've had or that are currently in the NHL were fringe players, on the flip side, some of the greatest players to ever play, Gretzky & Roy, were/are terrible coaches imo.
The merits of a player's on-ice performance have little to nothing to do with their ability to teach the game. I think your angle was two-fold, one that the fan base won't let him do his job because he let in bad goals during the playoffs, and two, that he's shown no ability to be a good coach.
I personally think that line of thinking is ridiculous! Cloutier has been coaching for several years and is seemingly very good at the technical and communication side of things. From what I've read. I can only go by what I've read.
Secondly, as I've said, a persons ability to coach has nothing to do with their abilities as a player….that's my opinion. Some of the most fierce competitors I've encountered on the ice were absolutely the most intelligent well mannered people off the ice. Stu Grimson being an example. - LeftCoaster
Beatle, Lefty totally called you stupid. Lefty I think Beatle thinks you are not that bright.

Henrik Sedin could also suck and Cole Cassels could score 40...
JV didn't suck last year and he is working out hard this summer and is no longer a teenager. The fact people don't expect a kid to improve is way more shocking than posters saying Burrows is done.
This conversation is somewhat ridiculous...let's see some competition in training camp and if players get out played throw them on waivers like Little Franky Corrado. This isn't the National Feelings League, it's a mans game. |

It really all depends on the kid's attitude. Maybe he expects to be "given" every opportunity when he should be looking to earn it. It wouldn't be the first time, nor the last. Personally I see nothing wrong with a "wait and see" attitude.
It helps keep an even keel, less highs and less lows. |

JV has come out and said he knows he needs to earn a spot and be better than last year. If he comes to camp a fat frank, then by all means banish him to Utica. I just think assuming Utica is the best place and assuming he won't make strides this summers is wrong. |

Sure, assuming he won't make strides is wrong. Also, assuming that he or any other player the Canucks have will make great strides is wrong. It's really no different either way, that's why I agree with Dbot on the "wait and see" approach. |

Definitley not disagreeing on the "wait and see" approach. I am advocating competition and earning roster spots. I just simply find it hard to imagine Burrows being more effective than Jake. Who knows, I have been wrong before (although not as often as Lefty )
We need something else to talk about. Anyone want to debate the merits of hiring Jason King? |
