I agree, having a veteran presence is important on a team.
Florida did it right, hell they overpaid for older players for 3-4 years, bringing in young players gradually and now they're looking amazing right now.
Edmonton threw all their young guys in the mix at once and... well... you know how things have been for them. - Scabeh
Edmonton always had some vets tho... I think people forget that. They just sucked.
Vets are important, but they can't be bad.. Fla has Jagr and had Campbell.. players who had very good careers.. Michalek, Martin, Greening, Laich not so much..
Kadri, Bozak, JVR, Hunwick, Polak, Andersen are our vets... None are really stand out leaders but at least they are better then the aforementioned. |

When Hall and Eberle broke in the veteran leaders were Dustin "Pancakes" Penner and Ales "Broken" Hemsky
Yet people are surprised they are so (frank)ed atm. |

Laich has had a decent career...Michalek not bad.
Martin was just a bad signing.
Also, none of the people you mentioned would be good leaders to learn from....except maybe Polak. Exempt would be Anderson....dont know much about him |

Yes well picking the right vets is important I agree.
They need to still be able to contribute and have a positive influence on how to act as professional hockey players (which is very different than playing junior or even the AHL).

You have to put up points to be a leader now days.. He didnt contribute much at the end of last year. Jagr is one of the most respected players in the game and Fla feeds off that.. Nylander i dont think was dazzled by Laiches presence.. |

He being their 2nd line centre held them back for years. |

Yeah sure...
And i believe JVR, Bozak, Hunwick, and even Kadri exemplify that. Also our young guys are pretty mature especially Matthews. Nylander seems to handle playing in Toronto like he was born to be here.. |

Says who?
He has over 330pts in his career and brings qualities to the table that you would want the kids to learn from.
He doesnt have to put 50 pts every year to be a leader on the team....jesus.
There is only one Jagr in the league....not every team can have him....doesnt mean there arent other leaders.
Did you ask Nylander about Laich?
From what I hear, Brooks was very well liked and respected in the dressing room. |

No reason for him not to be liked.. or respected.. And yes, theres only 1 Jagr, but you can't say that there arent better, more respected leaders out there than Laich. I dont mind Liach playing 4th line and a bit of 3rd line.. He's not really what im worried about |

Imagine the current Leaf roster with an able bodied Mats?
Then imagine the current Jays roster with an effective Roy Halladay on it.
would be so awesome. |

Not to mention that Laich played with Papa Nylander back in Washington for two years, so I'd be surprised if William didn't already know him beforehand... |

For putting up points, possibly yes.
But to get a stud vet who still dominates...will cost.
For now, I dont mind Laich on the 3rd or 4th line. |

We're talking about having players int he lineup who can help the rookies adapt to the NHL lifestyle/game..
Absolutley those guys will help.. Imagine you've been on a job for 6 years and they hired some young worker.. "sorry guys, ive only been here 6 years i dont know anything yet".
You like to turn simple observations and opinions into full blown arguments. If you think Bozak, JVR, Kadri, Hunwick, Polak have nothing to offer in terms of experience and advice you are entitled to your opinion but i think you are wrong. |
