They've got a shot at making it, but it's not because the addition of Kulikov gives the sabres a formidable defence. It's because their core has the potential to carry a team into the playoffs. And when healthy Lehner's pretty good.
Edit: I am rooting now. Im rooting for them to make one more move so I can really get behind this team/be more confident about there chances. - Sabresfan-365
We'll see a move in 10 more days - one way or another (Blondie1980)

Took me a second or two, but I got it.
I really want to see Lehner get into one this year. Have the Sens sign Emery for a game so he can retire a Sens, and start him so he and Lehner can fight at "Centre ice". A beautiful way to end a career, well maybe not getting the poop beat out of you, but the rest...
I'm optimistic. But then I usually am for some crazy reason; even though I'm probably the most cynical(realistic) person on this thread. It's certainly a risky way of going about it, but for the most part they've been good moves. I think trading away McGinn was a bad move especially seeing what he signed for in Arizona. He'd be a perfect 3rd liner on this team.

I don't think they're far off, this current team i have just missing out which is why id like to see them make another move. Gives them a better chance from day 1. The McGinn thing...well gone back and forth on that enough times

We certainly have, but are you really going to argue he's not worth $3.33M per? For a guy that can play, and thrive, up and down the lineup and on the PP, the only things he doesn't do is take faceoffs and play the PK. Ok, so he's not super physical, but neither is ROR.

Thrive is a relative term and plenty has been said about his enhanced role on this team when it was bad (i.e PP time he wouldn't normally see when this team added other top 6 fwds). My issue isn't necessarily that he himself is or isn't worth 3.33 mil. I don't like the idea of spending big money on those "tweener" type forwards.
The recipe for success over the years seems to be that you pay your core guys no matter what and cycle out the "bottom 6" (or whatever we call them now since we got this whole top 9 thing going) with players you've drafted over the years.
I think the highest paid of that bunch for the pens this year was Fehr at around 2 mil and in total came in at something like 6.5 mil. IIRC chicagos last year was even cheaper.

What's really head scratching is he turned down more money and term from the Sabres only to sign for less money and term with the Yotes on day one of free agency. He must've fired his agent.

We're missing something. Because, you're right it doesn't add up.

I think it's dangerous to chase what other teams have done. You can't chase luck. Pittsburgh got extremely lucky with a goalie on a low-end ELC and guys like Sheary and Rust. Sheary equaled his regular season output of 10 points in 44 GP in just 23 GP in the playoffs and Rust with 11 in 41 regular season and 9 in 23 playoff games. Both playing way above what they normally had. Pittsburgh is the luckiest team in a while to win the Cup. And by lucky I mean the lightning in a bottle goalie making only $620K and two guys making less than $1.5M combined playing out of their minds. There was a reason their coach got fired mid-season. Because they weren't very good, but they got really hot at the right time. And when you have Crosby, Malkin and Letang it's easy to mask shortcomings.
Chicago on the other hand. Well Bowman is just a wizard, but I also don't think it's coincidence that the year Kane and Toews' contracts kicked in was the year they had a very poor showing in the playoffs.
How many days til Vesey officially announces he's screwing the Sabres? - Hatboro_Swords
lol who knows. He's allowed to talk/sign with other teams next Monday, but I think he'll take to probably Friday or the following Monday to make his decision. Unless someone comes in and blows the doors off which really doesn't seem possible at this point due to the restriction on money.
One of these teams (Tampa, Pittsburgh, Detroit) is going to get left holding the bag on a goalie. Pittsburgh and Detroit need to shed salary to be compliant. Detroit needs to get rid of almost $5M. Tampa will probably end up over too once they sign Kucherov and Nesterov. They only have about $6.5M at the moment. And Tampa is at 50 contracts already, so they have to get rid of 2 guys before they can even sign Kucherov and Nesterov. Unless RFAs are counted, but I don't think they are.
Too bad the Sabres aren't really in a position to take advantage. The last thing they're in the market for is an overpriced goalie.

lehner, girgens and kane for drouin and bishop and 2 scrubs

I would do that in a heartbeat and I like Lehner, but it makes no sense for Tampa to do that. It gives them cap no relief this year, and they likely have to make moves with this year in mind. If you swap Kane with a first that makes it more palatable for them. That way they get about $2M in cap space, guessing ~$2.5M for Girgs. I still don't think that's enough for them to move a future superstar.
Snapping your leg is one thing. I think the worst part was the noise. Then to have the EMTs drop you. Oh man, that's just bad luck.
Edit: Beware following the twitter link. It has a bunch of men's naked asses(if you get worked up about that sort of thing) as the guy's twitter banner pic. But he does have video of the EMTs dropping the poor guy.
