I have spoken to a few Oilers buddys and they were disappointed when he left, actually played well. The Oilers actually were trying to get him to return and he said he wouldn't play for them for whatever reason. He may surprise - CanuckDon
He, IMO, has more potential to be what people are hoping for. Having said that, I want to see something from him by Christmas, on a consistent basis.
Shorter leash than Rodin (if he even makes the team). |

It could be the weather or perhaps it's because Ronny Peliep is a fan |

I think Tanev is a smart shut down Dman. You need 1 player like that. In the past the Canucks had 4 of them. That meant no one was shooting fighting or hitting. I like him better than Edler. I think it is time to try upgrade Edler. - VANTEL
Thought that's what Gudbranson was bought into do? |

Finally, someone who will punish the opposition anywhere near the blue paint. A guy most of us have been screaming for for years. Garth Butcher might have been the last one. |

Who is going to be the biggest surprise at camp? - A_SteamingLombardi
I think Virtanen, he plays a hard game and has a wicked shot, im hoping for the kid line Baer-Bo-Virtanen to be kept together long enough to get the chemistry they showed in the pre season, if that happens id predict bo and sven with 20+ goals and virtanen with 16 |

Half the posters on here would rather have Garrison and Corrado playing paddycake on the blueline as opposed to big Gundbranson being mean to other players |

Gudbranson > Garrison
Stetcher > Corrado
It took Corrado how many games to crack the leafs roster, i dont see how people can still talk about him. Garrison couldnt hit the net, i would of much rathered keep that pick and drafting McKeown then trading for Vey (contradicting myself but i did like Vey, not as much as Mckeown though) |

Not that I don't believe you but out of curiosity I looked up hits leaders last year. Bizarre list of players.
Murphy, Pageau, Phaneuf, Lee, Polak, Dahlbeck, Schenn all rank highly.
Leafs have number 1, 3 and 5 on their team.
It's full of bottom 6 forwards, bottom 2 D.

That's because the puck was always in their own end

I see no silver lining. That's why I said they are all bottom 6 forwards, bottom 2 dmen.
How the (frank) did you get what you said, from what I said. |

No silver lining? Leafs finished 1, 3, 5 . That sure sounds like trying to making chicken salad out of chicken sh1t |

It's proving a point how useless having a guy is whose strength is hits having on your team. Other than Komarov who's fairly useful, Polak and Martin are nothing to write home about.
I agree with you, and your assessment of hits vs never having the puck, having Gudbranson because he "hits and fights" is a terrible excuse for having a player. |

That's where you are better evaluating your own team and not trying to act like you know the Canucks .
For years they have been bullied. Goalies have gotten hacked and whacked with no retaliation. There was never a fear of payback from the opposition which lead to multiple chances by the other team.

I think that's a fallacy and an outdated view on the game. I'm not a stats lover, nor do I understand the graphs most bloggers use, but I don't believe in this taking liberties idea. If your PP is top 5 (ish) in the league let them whack away.
The current Stanley Cup Champions, don't have anyone to scare people. Trevor Daley or Eric Fehr would be their 'tough' guys.
They beat San Jose in the final. Who on San Jose is coming after you?
What about the conference finalists? Tampa. Are you going to worry about retaliation from Paquette or Brown? Probably not.
Still, they made it far.
The Blues and Ducks can handle themselves but sacrifice that for offensive talent, thus never living up to people's predictions of them.
You don't need tough guys. Tough players in the sense of work ethic and commitment (never say die attitude) but fighters and retaliators? Meh.
Take a punch, get yourself on the PP and put the game away.
Don't get me wrong, it was fun as (frank) watching Orr, McLaren, Mike Brown and Mark Fraser knock ten bells of poop out of the opposition game in, game out, but it didn't solve a thing. |
