Given his college stats I'd say somewhere between a Zach Hyman and a Jimmy Hayes. He'll likely be a serviceable 3rd liner, but to expect any more is to set yourself up for disappointment...

That's the kicker right there, (frank)ing college. He's not playing against the best young talent. I realize Garth has said that the NCAA is way more grueling than the CHL or any other league. But let's get real, it's no comparison, especially considering Vesey's age. Then again, I'm not a scout, nor do I know anything other than being witness to this bullpoop every year. Especially when Burke was in charge of the Leafs.

The kid is 23 years old. If he was/is going to be a top 6 winger he would be in the nhl already. If toronto signs him I will not be pleased. Overrated.

1) There have been seven players -- in the entire NHL -- to get 80 or more points the last two seasons. To expect Vesey to be in the company of the likes of Kane, Crosby, Taveres, Ovechkin, etc. is to set the bar unrealistically high.

2) To be an 80-point guy as a 30-goal scorer, he'd have to be a 50-assist player. Three problems with that: First, he never had more assists than goals even one season in his college career. Second, the 50+ assist realm is the domain of the NHL's elite playmakers. Finally, 30-goal players aren't exactly in heavy supply in today's NHL, either.

3) Vesey is a good NHL prospect and could be a productive offensive player. But he's not the second coming of Paul Kariya or even close to that sort of lofty pedigree.

After reading this article I suspect the heart of the matter is Vesey wants to play for a big market team instead of Nashville. This may all be about office opportunities and endorsements. So Toronto, Chicago and NY Rangers look like the real payday destination.

If this Vesey story wasn't hanging out there, the only thing being written about the NHL in August would be how ugly the World Cup sweaters are, or that Foley shouldn't have been given an expansion franchise because he can't even come up with a name for his team. I prefer the Vesey story.

he was 22 playing against 18-22 year olds. obviously he's going to stand out. i'm sure he'll be a legit top 9 forward in the nhl by the time he's 25/26 but he still needs a year or two in the ahl playing against men. no need for all the hype.

For what it's worth:

1) You're saying he's not wrong then?

2) It confirms the earliest is not tomorrow or later, which means there's a possiblity he would sign today (which was yesterday and it didn't happen).

3) Why am I defending Eklund?
