first of all he played 4 years. graduated with a harvard degree. that's why he's 23. as i'm sure you're aware most NCAA freshman are 20 nowadays. they typically play 1 or 2 years of USHLor NTDP before jumping. - Fountain-San
First off, I don't care if he has a Harvard Degree and a Doctorate from MIT. It has nothing to do with his ability to play hockey. Good for him, he's clearly a smart kid who's making very calculated decisions to plan his future. What the eff does that have to with anything relevant to hockey ability?
He's still playing against younger players in a weaker pool. Yes, he's steadily improved as time went on. College Hockey is not even the same speed as the AHL. He's rightfully a 3rd round pick and I'm sure you're aware of the probability of a player drafted after the 2nd round winding up as a top-six forward.
It also becomes harder for a player the older he is, not that 23 is old by any stretch, but it's not as of an adjustment to pro hockey than when you're 19, 20 or even 21. |

you just won the thread. - Fountain-San
I'd rather yell and talk in circles all day, thank you very much.
I am outraged that this is receiving so much coverage when reporters could be giving us detailed information about what food Bryan Rust ate out of the Stanley Cup. |

The title question of this blog makes no sense.
Re-phrased "Is it worth giving up absolutely nothing including cap space(he can be waived if he sucks) to acquirea quality prospect?"
If anybody says no... I have no words to describe their lack of intelligence.
If the question was "Will Vesey immediately be a quality top 6 player?" then we can at least have the discussion that the blog was about.
Yes. It is worth giving up nothing to acquire a quality prospect. Every time. - Njuice

Leafs are in the same. Our only LW is JVR and we have great prospects and competition for jobs at every other position.
I think Leafs are a long shot anyways, but they fit the exact same thing as NJ, except with a better pool of youth. But no Schneiders on our team. Or 25 of the other teams in the league. - Njuice
Does he though? Isn't Komarov a good bet for your 2nd line LW? Plus I imagine that one of Nylander or Marner will have to convert to wing if they want to secure a spot and they're easily better than Vesey. |

It's not a FREE ASSET. I love how everyone thinks it is. He'd be a free asset if he was part of a team's system on a two-way contract.
To teams like the Islanders, Penguins, Rangers and Bruins, every bit of cap space is precious. |

I wasn't aware that signing Vesey precludes a GM from ridding himself of another player.
His cap hit would be all of $925k, I don't know a ton of teams that couldn't find that money somewhere. |

I have watched a few videos of the boston summer league on youtube with VZ playing with jack eichel. I am no NHL scout, and yes i know the boston summer league is not the NHL, but i think if you watch those videos, Veseys talent is obvious. Smooth, fast skater. Excellent puck handling ability, excellent passer, lethal shot. Also seems adept at sneaking into a passing lane to set himself up for a shot.
I know my sabres are a long shot to get him, as a fan i will hold no animosity against him if he signs elsewhere ( unless of course he signs with the Leafs )
He may not be the next coming of Gretzky, but he looks too multi-talented to be a bust
The whole #veseywatch thing may be way over-hyped but ... Its the middle of August and he is the only game in town |

They don't have to.
If you don't have the space to add a guy on an ELC, you probably (frank)ed up somewhere. |

No, he won't. I mean, you're technically right, but the second he steps on the ice for that 11th game it is no longer a two-way deal.
Again, and this has been made clear, Vesey's camp is looking for a team that's going to give him good long look in the top six. |

Being a fan of Carolina, you're probably a bit unfamiliar have having high-priced top talent.
When you're a team that spends to the cap and you have a lot of high-end players it's very easy to have very little space. |

I don't believe it works that way. I'm pretty sure once you play that 11th game you've now burned one year of the ELC regardless of where you play. I could be wrong about that though. |

Marner is a RW. Never was a center in OHL. Nylander will be starting training camp on the RW with Matthews. Babcock already said that's how it'll start anyways.
Komarov had a great year last year, but he's more of a role player. I'm not overvaluing Komarov, but you are right, I had forgetten him. |

Josh Bailey
Shane Prince
Our beat writer swears up and down that he does not expect Halak to be an Islander come opening night. So that would be $4.5M off the books.
Even if that doens't happen, there's also a very real chance that Nelson, at some point, gets traded to avoid the expansion draft. Probably not until after the season, but I think Snow would be able to find the room to squeeze Vesey in until then. |
