Rolls over to the next year - though I think I also read that if the team has the space, it could count that year, so the crunch doesn't hit the next season. That added part was from a poster somewhere on HB, not any look into the CBA on my end. |

the sum of the bonuses earnable by players on the opening night roster will be greater than the 7.5% allowed by the bonus cushion, meaning some of them will count against the salary cap immediately
Basically put in place so you cant just roll out a team of ELCs on their own. Thats why Leaf Fans were a bit delusional with their Vesey line up....they cant have him, Mathews, Marner, Nylander, Zaitsev...since that would start counting against their cap now, putting them over without a back up goalie on the roster.
Cap is at 73m....7.5% is having a max of 5.475m in performance bonuses until it starts counting against the cap now. |

So do we sign Girgs or trade him? Where does he fit on the roster? Larsson might be our 3C so do you pay Girgs a lot of money to be a 4C? I don't see him as a winger in the top 6. |

He knew he was going to New York the whole time. How can the Rangers make a better pitch and set the kid up better for a second contract than Chicago or Pittsburgh? Honest question I'm not sure even a Rangers fan could answer it. Vesey wanted to play with Hayes and live in New York everything else was just smoke - mattmoulson
If he signed with the Rangers the next day, I would have been OK with that.
The circus he put on was ridiculous for someone who has accomplished exactly nothing at the NHL level.
Buffalo fans should feel relieved.

After Thursday I sort of felt this way too. What other player is going to get boo'd in possibly 3 cities (Nashville,Buffalo, Boston) his 1st NHL season ? |

I wont begin debating specific numbers because I can't be bothered to research and figure it all out.
The bottom line is that the Leafs, and every other team, were prepared to offer what they could afford and what they felt he was worth.
We don't know about the discussions between Vesey and any of these teams.
If the Leafs met with him, they had some interest, and Leafs fans were not delusional.

29 cities.
One thing I have liked about the recent Leafs regime is Babcock wanting his players to be good people.
I won't go so far as to suggest anything bad about Vesey because we don't know much about him. I really don't like the optics of the whole thing though.

Between his agent and social media, Vesey has to be one of the most hated players in the league without ever playing a game...twitter has made him look like an entitled a$$

No delusional that you were able to give him the max bonuses and still have Marner/Nylander on the team, making up the Top 6 with Matthews. If they went after vesey, they wouldnt be able to have those 2 rookies on without adding the bonus cushion to the cap this year.
Without any other major cap relief moves...they 3 or 4 of the rookies wouldnt be on the team at the same time to start this year. If he really wanted max bonuses, that would put the Leafs over the cap without a back up goalie signed, so big cap shedding moves would have to be done as well |

Nashville might have a reason to boo him, as they may have had a good reason to think they could ink Vesey during their 3 years. And that's only based on "what normally happens" and the possibility that Vesey wasn't as clear with them before the TDL as he was with everyone else after. (I know there are two sides to that story).
Neither Buffalo or Boston have any reason to Boo. He couldn't be any clearer that he was going to the market. |

He made it very easy for people to label him a bust. He is going to be expected to put up numbers right out of the gate.
If he does not score 20 goals this year, the critics will be many, and be very loud at that.
Add - I fully expect a CBA alteration to fix this NCAA loop hole. |

I don't see it as a loophole at all. If you stay in school for that long you can become a free agent. You're still restricted in salary. In the vast majority of cases good players sign earlier so they can get paid. This guy may have been a UFA of sorts but he wasn't getting paid while he was in school.

20 goals is a MINIMUM for someone who carried on with this whole circus. |
