It got us in the conversation and raised the profile of Buffalo as a destination for other players . It was the last of our 4 3rd round picks so yes its value was minimal. If it would have paid off you would be screaming he is a genius . It put us in the game that we would have not have been in . Like a buy in at a high stakes poker game.

I'm fine with it. It was worth the gamble and considering we got Asplund in the 2nd in the Kulikov trade and Pu and Fitzgerald in the 3rd, I like it. It would have been nice to sign Vesey but I think Murray might have a few more moves.

I gave him credit for almost landing Babcock. I was impressed we were going to go after Stamkos. I liked the trade to talk to Vesey.

None of that matters when you don't get the target. That's 3 times in 1 calendar year we were talking to a "Hot commodity" and we went 0 for 3. Which is fine. But I'm not applauding that as some sort of profile builder. It means nothing in the end

I don't think it was necessarily a bad move but how did it get you into a conversation you would not have been in anyway on August 16? If anything the failure to land him when you had the only shot just reinforces the idea that Buffalo is not a preferred destination

Gionta likely. It's tough to take it away from a guy. Not to say it never happens. See San Jose. But usually it's his until he leaves, or doesn't want it anymore if it's just the coaches decision. If the team votes on it like they supposedly do in Montreal then it's anybody's guess.
