I don't want to jinx it but today and yesterday for the most part there has been some decent discussion in here for the first time in a while. I read Carols blog every day and usually catch up on every blog and this is the first time in a while that I have actually felt like chiming into it. lets keep it going guys. |

That's all I've been saying... just with a bit more whine.
After the Torts fiasco the canucks were perfectly poised to blow it up and go tank. We would have been entering our 3rd year of a 4 to 5 year tank. Instead they signed Miller and decided to take another shot at the cup while the Sedins are under their current contract.
I couldn't even get that sentence out without laughing.
I find it funny that some fans won't except a tank but will put their entire faith in "if you get to the playoffs - who knows what will happen" strategy. I have a hard time understanding it. - bloatedmosquito
As I said in an earlier post, that's a lonely path to nowhere. The way the team is currently constructed, they'd be better off to draft well and build from there. That said, I really want the twins to reach 1000 points and to tudor the younger guys for two more years. After that, I'm a lets draft high for a couple years to add to the already good young players we have. |

Look at his draft record since he's been here. He's had 3 drafts, 2 of which we can measure player performance since. He's had success with virtually every pick. Some will take longer to judge sure, but for the most part everything he seems to pick is solid. Look at the names in his picks, hell even JV and mcann made the team 1st year.
the trades are not as good but his drafting is amazing.
how many GMs have a draft record like that? Id say the only 1 comparable is Ken Holland - SMBDragon
Are you talking Jake Virtanen and Boeser? Or Demko? I think JV is the only one we can measure with NHL experience. The rest are a question mark.
Is Juolevi this years success? I don't even think that was JB's intended target at all. I expect the management team had their eyes on a bigger prize...
(frank) I love that image. |

Scooby is bald, I have a fine head of hair - CanuckDon
I'm the only man in my family with hair left. My brothers and my Dad for the last 10 years(since they went bald all in their early/mid 20s) have been saying I am next. Well I am 36 and still have a full head of hair. I am going grey already but who cares I have hair. |

Not to be negative but I think we will be in a good drafting position again this year.
Edit: As far as Playoffs go I do believe that any team can catch lightning in a bottle. Hot goalie. Scoring touch. Players that believe. |

You are the most negative person I have ever conversed with. Is it just an internet act or are you like this in real life? Everything is not awesome. Our team was terrible last year. I like the direction of the team and I am sorry that you aren't onside with it. You already bailed on the team ditching your tickets so why are you still so invested? - CanuckDon

Everyone thought we were to good to be in the lotto this past season but I do believe you are correct 8 to 12 is about how I see things now. I hope they prove you wrong. I like winning. |

I'm hoping for the playoffs, if that isn't happening, I hope JB makes the best of the situation by seeing if he can trade away Burrows, Sbisa, talk to Hansen to determine an extension or if he will be traded...

If you are going grey at 36 then you will probably keep it. Early greying and early baldness don't mix. |

I agree about the vets. Got to have them to balance out your roster but they are generally easy to find. Even Gillis was able to find aging vets to compliment his core. I never said the tank method required an all-rookie roster. So we'll put that one aside.
As for my point on obtaining a superstar player; I was coming from a point of a team trading a superstar off their roster. Not drafting one. We occasionally see these types of players (Hall, Subban, Weber being most recent) becoming available. To put together a package to obtain those players you need picks and prospects. You got to be bad to have those assets.
When I look at guys like Ohlund, Sedins, Bieksa, Kesler, and even Hansen I see how valuable good drafting is to create a cup contending team.
I think the days of drafting a Daigle are over. Drafting has become much more reliable in the top three to five.
I think drafting has become the only legitimate way to build a cup-challenging team. Having high draft picks improves your chances of assembling a quality core group of players. Therefor the tank has merit. - bloatedmosquito
I think it is absolutely fascinating to see the top 5-10 picks from 2000 and before and how much of a crapshoot it was to get a star player in the draft. Some were serviceable players, like Berard, but pales in comparison to the impact of Iginla in the same year. Drafting today is such a science and its rare a player flies under the radar, "if youre good enough to play at the next level they will find you" is what they always told us around the rinks
This quiz is a fun test of HOFers and busts at first overall

I love winning too, but at some point EVERY team needs to take a step back and build from within, the Canucks are currently there IMO.
The most successful teams in franchise history were built primarily through the draft; from 2010 to 2012 the team had 49 wins, 54 wins & 51 wins with the Sedins, Kesler, Edler, Bieksa, Schneider and Burrows who was found by the Manitoba Moose organization (AHL affiliate) as their core. |

Don's a VIP member of the circle-jerk gang. The boy's a ray of sunshine beating down on this pile of poop we call the canucks. Everything's awesome. No problems here. Move along. - bloatedmosquito
Where I respect Bloated's opinion, (a healthy dose of reality keeps you grounded), and yes most of my posts are pro Canucks; the polar opposite opinion to me makes no sense.
Why would I want to be a fan if everything sux all the time....(unless I was one of those people who liked to watch figure skating for that one moment when a girl takes a fall so I could go "ha ha...you trained for 4 years and you blew it.....ha ha look at her cry as shes trying to finish her routine".
I have pulled for this team since the 80's......and as much as people want to down play things down, this team, in the time that they have been in the league, have accomplished a (frank) ton more then a lot of its contemporaries......yes a presidents trophy isn't a stanley cup, but out of the 29/30/31 teams, only one team gets it....and its awarded for the team that has the most wins/points.....out of playing every team...not just a series with one team. We have lost in the finals 3 times.....yes we didn't win. We were brides maids....but 90% of the teams that mock the Canucks have never been to the damn party.
In '94 when we traded for Courtnall, Ronning and Momesso....I thought who the (frank) are these nobodies.....but with the magic of the russian rocket, and being lead by Trevor, that rag tag team gave us one of the most memorable play offs of all time.....
I am a fan, and I have hope......If I didn't I wouldn't watch. |

With Edmonton's need for help on defense, JB must have hoped/expected they would pass on Puljujarvi and get the dman they needed.
just like fans of other clubs, gm's of other clubs think they know what their counterparts should be doing to build their team and be competitive. |
