If Edler is moved where is the offence going to come from the defencemen? - Eldebrink
I don't think when Devils traded Larsen , they worried who will replace him. Edler is decent but he is not Paul Coffee or Chara |

I am a Canuck fan and I am not the slightest bit worried . I think Benning and Co have done a bang up job. - VANTEL
Tine will tell ...I haven't minded most of his moves ...but if he starts trading first rounders or good prospects for players to help win now my mind as well as others could change ...depending on the deal of course |

That's because they got Hall for him.... If Benning is able to get that kind of value out of Edler, you have a point.
NJ isn't also, seemingly, hell bent on making the playoffs so they can afford to hurt one area to help another.
Edler is most likely irreplaceable for another few years, like it or not. |

Edler was your most offensive D man wasn't he ? I'm not high on him but you need offence from the back end ...Especially if you have any hopes on playoffs
Also the Devils got Taylor Hall ...that helps them not worry about the Larsens offence |

Look at teams like Oilers Leafs Hurricanes Buffalo and others that have taken the slow and steady approach .
Hall first one drafted , hits prime traded.
Eberle RNH Yak all part of every trade rumour.
When the players hits prime they want to move them.
All teams are still in the bottom of the league. You can't just have a bunch of twenty year olds. Even the Flames with all their patience finished 24 th.
You need good trading and smart UFA signings and development |

Do you think Edler will be traded for Lupul , Bozak or Ryan Spooner? Cmon .
I think if there is a deal that makes sense for a young player of need you make it. Edler has 3 years left only |

If Benning and co want to win with the sedins at some point sure but if they think going for it during this current contact with the twins is a good idea ? If I'm a Canucks fan I'd be a little worried about that thought ....be patient and keep adding pieces for the future - Redmile247

I'm not so sure about that, I believe the Devils are just as much hell bent on making the playoffs as Vancouver, why would they trade for Hall in the first place, for offence that is needed.
Other than the "shoved down your throat" that the only way to to succeed is the Toronto tank method, I think most teams start their season to make the playoffs...even Edmonton. |

Everyone needs to stop using the oilers as an example for not being patient ...those kids were set up to fail
The leafs just started their patience with the new regime ...they are adding lots of young talent
Sabres and canes both have the makings of very good teams
The flames also have a lot of good young players now and just need to add a couple secondary pieces and figure out their goaltending
going the patient route means you can't expect results right away ...

They got Taylor hall ... if Benning was offered hall there's probably no one he wouldn't have traded for him ... plus playing in the east they have an easier chance to get in

So let's go back to the reason why they traded for him...to make the playoffs, not for a rebuild, not for the perceived "patience is the only way" they want to make the playoffs regardless of the conference they play in.
Are you suggesting that no western conference team should have considered trading a solid defensive player for Hall because it may be harder to secure a playoff spot, not buying it. |

This is so cliche
You have to look at the Oilers seeing they have had 4 of 10 number one pics and multiple others .
This is not TOR first year. They have been bottom of the league for a decade.
Buffalo NJ AVs Canes Flames all were bottom dwellers also for the good part of a decade.
Flames trade a first and two seconds for Hamilton brilliant. Benning trades for Gudbrandson for a first round pick and a second and he's a dummy.
Calgary trade for a goalie to fill a hole but dear me if Canucks do it. |

I get what your saying ...but I feel that trade is a bad example ...when a deal like that comes up you have to ignore your plan and make the trade before they change their mind

Do you think Benning would consider trading edler for Fleishman?
I would have to think if Edlers name is being tossed around , that Jim knows it would leave a hole so it would have to be a significant return. |

you think the leafs have been tanking for a decade and not two years?
The Sabres decided to rebuild and go for Connor ...not too long ago
The flames weren't trying to rebuild until they traded iggy ...even then they called it a retool
If you polled all 30 GMs and asked if they would rather Hamilton or guddy that might answer your question ...I for one like the deal as I wasn't high on McCann and EG fills a need for the Canucks

Iggys been gone 6 years now and your team finished 24 th. Can't really say I like your teams approach.
With all the positives that you think your team has done and everything that went wrong for us last year you only finished three spots above us.
No sir I don't see the advantage of doing it your way. |

Ok so let's put that trade aside, why would a GM not try to make the team better, why not try to build a contender, why is the patient tank method the best way forward. I like what Benning is trying to achieve, it may not achieve the holy grail, but it's more entertaining than the alternative, doesn't guarantee what other patient teams are employing is the best way forward. |

It's a head scratcher for sure.
If JB wants to compete for the cup now, then the roster he's put together is not competitive enough. He has a lot of work to do over the next few seasons.
If he's building for the future then he's made mistakes by trading picks and prospects for middling talent.
I'm not clear on the direction this team is taking. And I know I'm not alone. |

Why is the patient tank method the best way forward? It may not be the best way but I think it has become a viable option under today's NHL rules and environment. Few examples:
1. It seems to me that players you draft have fewer issues when it comes to contract negotiations. They stay longer and seem to have more loyalty to the crest.
2. I like the idea of players maturing together and developing together. Line chemistry is hard to find so an organization should find time to develop, not just individual players, but combinations of players.
3. When superstars come available (more rare now than ever) you as a franchise have to be in a position to compete for those players. that means high draft picks and a few prospects with potential. No better way of obtaining those assets than the "patient tank method".
The canucks have had success with building teams through trades; 94 team and the west coast express days. But I will argue that their only sustained success was with players that were drafted and developed by the team. |
