But there is, year's of poor drafting and management will kill any teams future.
The Oilers management has been nothing short of tragic since 2007 (until last year), the Canucks were poorly managed from a building perspective under Mike Gillis, the Flames have been a middling poorly constructed team for years but have recently drafted very well and Winnipeg is still suffering from the Atlanta curse.
If you let your team, as an owner, go through five years of poor drafting, eventually it's gonna come back and bite you in the ass!!! - LeftCoaster
I don't dispute any of what you have to say in regards to drafting and long term success.
All those teams did spend money and assets to get better in the short ( and long) term and the fact that they were still outplayed by teams that intentionally stripped their rosters of NHL talent is very sad. |

It is sad, it shows how poorly run the Canucks, Oiler, Flames and Jets/Thrashers have been in the past.
When you're trying to win and you can't even beat a team that has no intention of winning, or spending the money to be competitive, it's extremely sad. |

2 out of the last 3 years..... even though we picked 6th in 2014 we were the 5th worst team I believe.
Nvm. I was wrong. - belcherbd
I think last year was a tank year. Benning had plent of time to make trades when players went down.
The Torts year is different |

Worked for Chicago, LA and Pittsburgh - neem55
As has been stated many times those teams added several players to win the SC, it wasn't because they "they worked hard for that pick " tanked.
The canucks through injuries and poor player results got 3rd overall so they could be fortunate enough to pick 5th, there is better odds of dropping in the draft like the canucks did this past draft...doesn't sound like a solid plan to me, there was a 11.5% chance of 1st, 11.3% chance of 3rd or a 37.8% chance of dropping to 5th. But hey lets pick 5-8 and draft and develop for eons, awesome. |

It has been stated also that Toews, Kane, Doughty, Crosby, Malkin and Doughty are the MVP's of those teams (PLAYERS WHO THEY WOULD HAVE ZERO CUPS WITHOUT) and were drafted in the top-3 of their respective drafts (because their teams tanked for multiple years)
EDIT: all caps was not on purpose |

Yup....but to defend Benning, a lot of that can't attributed to a poor succession plan by Mike Gillis. You can fix a big mess in 24 months. |

Crosby was drafted high yes, but Pittsburgh didn't acquire him from sucking, they got lucky in a league wide lottery.
Edit: just for clarification. |

they picked first two years in a row. They tanked for Crosby, hard. Finished last in the league. Tanked for Malkin too.

LOL....it's impossible to tank for Crosby when it was a league wide lottery following the year long lockout. Every team had a chance at him. |

Are you suggesting that the team should tank on the off chance they "MAY' beat the odds and win a lottery pick? |

No one tanked for Crosby, the 2004/05 season was a total loss due to a lockout. It was just luck that they got him. Bettman luck |

You said the Pens tanked hard for Crosby which is factually incorrect, they did however get three lottery balls due to poor finishes, along with CBJ, NYR & Buffalo
Three balls
Buffalo Sabres, Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins
Two balls
Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, Atlanta Thrashers, Calgary Flames, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, Phoenix Coyotes
One ball
Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, Ottawa Senators, Philadelphia Flyers, San Jose Sharks, St. Louis Blues, Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, Washington Capitals

You skirted the question, but I'm going to assume that you believe it's better to roll the dice and cross your fingers and toes , rub your lucky penny, kiss your four leaf clover, wish upon a star, that the canucks tank for 1st overall at 20%...but in reality have far greater odds of 4th overall at 47.5%.
I am not a gambler and personally think it's crazy. Try to be the best you can be, tanking is asinine as the numbers prove.
In answer to your question (I believe) none of the above has a better chance at winning the SC next year |

The odds in the past 3 years have changed pretty significantly and we have started to see lesser teams losing out on positions. I think we will see the latest changes continue this pattern. I personally would be more upset if a team like LA misses the playoffs and wins 1st overall a lot more than teams tanking to try and get to the bottom.
The sad thing about Arizona is the fact that they have purposely destroyed their team and still have had better records than teams trying to win.
There is absolutely no excuse for Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg to be worse than Arizona and Buffalo. - belcherbd
It's simply not acceptable. Yes, the odds have changed but having teams lose intentionally is bad for the image and integrity of the sport. It needs to stop. If LA works hard to make the playoffs and misses out and wins the lottery...well in my opinion that is better than a perennially loser getting rewarded for incompetence.
