The downfall is there may be less $ to spend in other more important areas. this is a business and all businesses have budgets.
- CanuckDon

Actually, this is just a reflection of the "new" NHL vis-a-vis the salary cap. When big market teams have relative cost certainty on their highest priced input i.e. player acquisition, they can use the savings in other areas.

The money that those big market teams would have put into player costs are now being spent on bloated management and front office structures. Teams now have several assistant GMs, vice presidents for everything under the sun as well as specialized skills coaches.

So, while there may not be an endless amount of money to spend on coaches, this is definitely the direction that the league is going in. You are going to see bigger coaching and front office staffs especially from the big dogs.

As a further aside, I'm of the opinion that if the spending off the ice increases as it has been, I could see small market teams bringing this up during the next CBA negotiation. I could definitely see a "cap" on off ice spending.

okay, I know this is a hockey board, but if anyone needs a new laptop for a son or daughter, etc.. I just picked one up for <$200 taxes included. pm me for the link, hopefully the store doesn't clue into the pricing error. (Intel Quad Core 11.6" WXGA 2GB 32GB Win10)

Sorry to be that guy but $200 sounds about right for what that laptop is going to do for you.

no need to be sorry.

just for word processing and light surfing. easily fits into the kid's backpack, and he has a regular workstation at home.

price with tax actually came to $184.44

If you can find it cheaper in Canada, I'd be surprised. 80R200BRUS

I was shocked that it ended up being so cheap. little victories, it is nice when something goes your way.

the internet, don't surf when you are happy, cause someone is there to point out why you shouldn't be... (no offense belcher, just a generality)

Great, I just wanted you to be forewarned that it was pretty basic but it sounds like you are aware.

I was building towers for friends and family for a little while, just a hobby, but I don't have the aptitude to charge what is appropriate and ended up stopping because it is a hassle when people constantly get viruses and mess up their stuff and come back to you...

(the hd on the laptop is a little disappointing at 32gb, we have an old netbook that has a 250gb hd, but I guess people are using the cloud more for storage.)

Pretty basic specs but great for kids for web browsing and simple apps. BTW CDW.ca has it listed for 166.95.

the consumer equivalent to throwing in a 2nd round pick is buying the extended warranty. if you did, that is just bad asset management. one or more bad transactions like that and your wife might need a meeting with you.

Ya the 32 GB hardrive will be used up pretty quickly, I imagine the operating system alone is 16-20 GB.

I'm sure you can get an external HD for it though or like you said rely on the cloud.

spending weekend afternoons trying to get rid of a computer virus or trouble shoot something that could turn into a few hours of hair pulling, all for a case of beer, took some of the fun out of the hobby.

Still a good deal. I work in the IT industry and prices like these are rare these days. Even though the proc clock speed is low it has SSD for HD so you will not see hangups when loading apps. As long as you are not heavy load multitasking. I would suggest getting an External HD for all data to be saved on and set that as default. Use the built in SSD for Apps only.
