Oh for franks sakes, why do Canadians have such a problem grasping this stupid concept?
Yes, Ontario receives Equalization payments. But they don't even come close to the amount of money that we put into Equalization - we are the biggest contributors to Equalization.
In 2016–17, Ontarians are projected to contribute approximately $6.9 billion to Equalization, while the Province will only receive approximately $2.3 billion in return.
Get it?
And that's only tiny bit of the story - money leaks out of Ontario to other provinces in a myriad of different ways. The most recent estimates are that Ontario contributes about $11 billion a year more to Canada than it receives.
FFS, nothing pisses me off more than the ungratefulness of Canadians outside of Ontario, who sneer at us and call us welfare recipients, while all the while enjoying a higher standard of living because Ontarians are paying for it through their hard work. - Atomic Wedgie
Thanks for the sermon but I spent many years negotiating federal provincial agreements and have a very good understanding of the country's fiscal arrangements. Equalization is the least of the bad deals affecting Ontario. Almost every federal program hits Ontario.
