Not saying this would solve all our problems, but a year or 2 of mandatory military service would be good imo. Everyone is treated the same. Instills national pride. Provides discipline and skills. Teaches how to use firearms properly. Tough looking threads....
I can say this now cuz my eight years were under Reagan, GHWB and Clinton so I didn't have to fight boogeyman terrorists....the "enemy" is not an easy concept anymore. - LandlordTom
I know more than a few that could benefit their social skills and prosper from a few years in the military.

If we had a country of 30-60 Million, sure. But 330 Million people and the diverse nature of the country it's just hard logistically and economically. Not to mention people who are opposed to it. It sounds like a good idea to me but idk.
I've proposed a citizenship plan that includes military service. People applying can enlist and after a certain time are granted citizenship for themselves and their spouse/children. It's give and take. This would be in addition, not the only way.
BTW, not sure this was said, Risto says he doesn't expect to be signed until after the WCOH has started. Said he "Hasn't heard anything in a while" as per @Shoffren

I know quite a few that went into the military and came out in worse shape (mentally and physically) than when they went in... The military is definitely not for everyone and you don't mysteriously come out a better person because you've joined the service.
I bet you don't know many black people. - SomeoneGerman
I don't either. But I wouldn't word things that way. We should all Judge a man by the content of his character not his out right appearance and circumstance.

Maybe not mysteriously a better person but at least you earn some skin in the game of freedom and, hopefully, making better life choices than if one had never served.

I didn't know many black people until about 10 years ago.
The guy I met since, and whose family I got to know, works two jobs, pays his bills, is faithful to his wife, and has raised his three kids AND TWO NEPHEWS AND A NIECE.
He works two jobs. He lives in a simple house. He's 53 years old and bought his first new car last year.
We were driving around about a year ago and he got pulled over. I still don't know why. When the cop asked him for license and registration, my buddy gave it to him, the cop looked at it for a while, gave it back to him, and told him "I'm just giving you a warning, slow down." After the cop left, I looked at my buddy like "what the hell is going on" and he said, "I'm sure he didn't see you in the passenger seat until after he pulled me over."

Maybe it was the Bad Cop, No Donut bumper sticker?

Was he speeding? - Garnie
He was travelling at the rate of traffic. So yes, he was speeding just like everyone else, about 5 - 10 mph over the limit. But we were the only ones stopped.
And I think that's what makes Kaepernick sit down.

you have no clue if that cop even saw that this guy was black.. he may have just picked one car to make an example of and it just so happened to be a black man.. but i think another note.. when pulled over he was polite and listened and only got a warning.
yes there are bad cops and crazy racist people.. but there are crazy racist people on both sides of this coin. one is just stirring the pot more lately and sadly has more of the power at the end of the day

How about instead of your (pretty much useless) senior year of high school, or even for summer break between each year, you have to do some type of "service"
Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Peace Corps, etc
Something useful to society that actually teaches u about what's going on in the world
