all the back and forth is just killing time.

the media does drive a lot of the discussion.

what I'd like to see is some projections from them on when they believe each team could be competitive.

also, with the way the media supports the tank, or doesn't support the Vancouver approach, how many teams can simultaneously and effectively tank and rebuild at the same time?

- hillbillydeluxe

Last year I made a post suggesting that tanking was only going to get worse.

It will get to the point where more than half the NHL will be trying to tank

I think the reason the Leafs are brought up so often is because the teams are in a similar position. There are many Canuck fans here that want to strip the team to bare bones, flip guys on PTO's and 1 year contracts for middle round picks and start from scorched earth. Then there are those that are buying into the Kool-aid that Benning/Linden are serving by remaining competitive.

The debate and criticism goes: "Well it hasnt work for the Oilers, but the Leafs are getting praised for it."; "Media says the Leafs are doing great but Vancouver sucks... man I hate how the media poops on our team even though we are getting younger NHL bodies and replenishing our prospect pool"; etc. etc.

Basically its two passionate fanbases who want their teams to succeed, but are keeping an eye on the other's method of building and comparing the two within their threads. I dont care if we get visitors, it can bring good discussion, but the part that annoys us the most is when commentors pile on the media-driven dialogue that Vancouver is a clueless franchise, when in reality it was a mess and untangling it takes time

- WhiteLie

Vancouver will finish between 10-20th and Toronto is guaranteed to finish bottom 5. I like watching competitive hockey and will never cheer for losses. We will build the old fashioned way. Make our mid round picks count, develop our kids properly in a competitive environment and supplement the lineup with competent veterans when the opportunitiy presents itself

It gets you elite talent, but that doesn't necessarily mean an elite team. If you don't have competent management and more good luck than bad luck all you get is 82 games of watching that elite talent spin their tires.
- CubanBuffet

a lot of luck...

late round draft picks panning out and staying relatively healthy are pretty critical.

And again, that is why the league is a joke. All non-playoff teams should have an even shot at the top pick. There is no integrity in the game anymore.

We hear that tanking is a great strategy in the long run.

So if, like you say, half the nhl starts trying to tank, how effective does the tanking strategy become?

Imagine half the league dumping their good players for picks, that means half the league is stacked... somewhere in the tank process you have to start winning, when would that start happening for those losing teams?

damn, I took a gander at the Leafs blog and saw this and it made me laugh...

My all time fave is still the day that they were claiming that the Seahawks superbowl win was a win for Vancouver because there were so many Seahawks fans there.
- Aetherial

it is along the same line of thinking that the Blue Jays are Canada's team...

It's pretty weird how obsessed Vancouver and Ottawa fans are. They'e busy naming players better than Marner, Nylander whoever.

I doubt many Leafs fans could name 2 Vancouver prospects.

- Aetherial

we are all fans of our own teams and don't really care enough of the opposition beyond dismissing them or looking past them with our homer blinders on...

I agree, but I also want it to be entertaining. I would rather the team play exciting hockey and finish 20th than trap and grind out 10th place. Draft well, develop those mid-round guys, make a few trades and always look to get better both short and long term

This.
You simply cannot have more than 5 teams or so trying to purposely tank....even that number is high....maybe 3.
There's simply not enough cap space on playoff teams to take the good players from tanking teams for pics.

funny thing is that this post could have been cut and pasted from the last 2 regime changes for the leafs.

counting chickens before they're hatched. modus operandi of both fan bases.

- RealityChecker

Yeah, but the last two regimes picked guys like Biggs and Gaulthier, rather than guys who had the skill and just needed time to grow into their adult bodies.

I think it's much more a case if how much air play the Leafs get. Most fans of Canadian based teams hate the Leafs.

Agreed, fans deserve exciting hockey. Nothing wrong with finishing in 20th place if the kids continue to develop, Benning drafts well and the fans are entertained

I guess the Blue Jays are Canada's team by default... I think that is just an attempt at marketing and I am surprised as many people around the country are buying into it as it seems.

Very true about how much people care about other teams.

Vantel, you know I love you man, but has a Leafs fan ever initiated a conversation here about our prospects except to troll, and I throw out the trolling because it works both ways.

Leafs fans respond to Leafs discussion. From what I have seen, Leafs discussion on Vancouver threads starts with Vancouver fans. Many of you guys are obsessed with the Leafs. That can't be good.

This is looking eerily similar to the Oilers rebuild.

Fans expecting instant success because they drafted highly rated prospects.

I think thats the massive deterrent to the tank/strip. Edmonton is still building and their 1st overall picks are already onto their big contracts. Those ELC's are the advantage in the cap age, but if it takes too long to build then that advantage is lost.

I think Buffalo was pretty smooth in their tank for McDavid, because immediately after they flipped a bunch of assets for O'reilly, Kane, Bogosian, Lehner and quickly built a competitive roster . Yes not all of those moves have panned out, but at the time it turned them from a bottom 3 team to discussion about possible playoffs

Yes it is tough to escape that comparison or fail to see the similarity.

I guess we hope that our picks succeed where theirs failed? We only had one first overall and they had like 4, so the odds seem a little bit against us.

i hear ya. if i was a leafs fan, i would be optimistic as well.

that doesn't mean that the optimism that is around the club now wasn't there at the onset of the new regimes. it's only in hindsight that you see that nonis (yikes!) and burke aren't especially great drafting gm's.

The blue Jays are Canada's team, and I'm a massive fan. Typical leafs fans look at that and gloat like I'm a fan of "their" team even though I live in Vancouver.

Your fan base is full of bum hole arrogant entitled losers that think the world revolves around them and their sports team.

I appreciate the concept, but I don't see where the Leafs and Canucks are all that similar this year.
