If i understand what your saying, then a player would take less long term for the security it offers. If youre 22 and take a 7 year deal for 5 million, thats a guaranteed 35 million. You could make more if everything works out, but maybe you get hurt or dont hit your potential? Its the safe play.
Take Connor Murphy, he gets way more than hes currently worth, but much less than he might be worth. The team gambles that he might get better and if he does they suddenly have a player making less than hes worth, which is huge in a salary cap system.
So theres like a mutually benificial number with each party carryjng some risk, not that the player knows hes injury prone or anything like that . - James_Tanner
Omg we are on completely the same page......I need to go buy a lottery ticket now... All the same, I don't agree with you sometimes butt always appreciate you getting back to us, makes a big difference, other than some of those "ahem" blog writers that don't support their points of view. Thanks for being real, but I might have some intelligent ass comment to make in the future, just to keep you honest |

Reider is only 23 and he plays a good all-round game. He's really fast, he's pesky, he back-checks, he can score, kill penalties......he's a likable player. And he has no contract.

He is labelled a franchise player in NHL 2016, so there's that. |

Wow. I actually clicked on one of your music videos for the first time! It's amazing what Scarlett Johansson can do (keep it PG, boys).
As for Rieder, I've always thought he looked like a trustworthy, but not exceptional player. Kind of a Domenic Moore with a higher upside. You definitely want that kind of player, but not at $4mil per year, if you can help it. |

Rieder should come in around $3-3.5 mill per. Maybe higher.
Problem is the Coyotes don't really have that kind of space. |

Didn't they trade for every bad contract in the league so they could get to the floor? |

They're almost at the cap ceiling now. They just don't have to actually pay a big chunk of the salary they've accumulated.
They're at $70 million in cap space used up with 50 roster spots used. They'll get a bit of relief for LTIR if they need it, but still... |

They do, once the season starts they'll have a ton on LTIR and no cap hit.
Plus, I doubt he gets $3.5 even, goals pay and defense doesn't that's just how it works. I predict he'll sign for 2 years at like $2.5 - if he gets $3.5 i'd be shocked if it wasnt a pretty long term deal.
I am hearing they are close and that he'll sign soon. |

Some of their roster spots are junior eligible guys and don't count. I could be off, but recently someone from the organization tweeted the count and I think it was 46 professional contracts. |

Yeah I just read that.
now I am confused about what they have been doing. I get the pay less than your cap hit theory, but isn't that usually in an effort to get to the floor?

That's sort of the perception, but it's not really correct. They are actually somewhat close to the cap ceiling. They did make moves last year to get to the floor, but this year they actually spent some cash. |

It's just about utilizing all the space - Detroit and Philly and whoever else paid the Coyotes to take their cap hits, it was never really about the floor or the ceiling - just accumulating assets. |

more than anything, they used excess cap space as an asset to acquire better prospects.

My wife says that's a sexist saying. I've never once been sent to the couch and I doubt I'd go. I have to wait a week for the bed to get delivered. |

I would say that Rieder is to Moore as Crosby is to me. |

I hope so. Rundblad has always been effective when he plays and deserves a shot - much like TJ Brennen, Gormley and Marc Arcobello. |

Hence the "with a higher upside" part of the comment. Just saying he is an all-around, utility type rather than a star. |
