Risto's negotiating position is very unique. On paper, he has absolutely no reason to ask for more than what Morgan Rielly got. The problem for Murray is the next best righty after him is Bogosian and TM only has 1 year left on his deal so he can't exactly let this drag into the season and watch the team drop points early on as a result of the best d-man not being in the lineup. Risto will win unless he gets dealt.

I'm not saying that he doesn't deserve to get paid. My point is that maybe he's asking for some crazy amount of money (I personally wouldn't want to see him at $7MM or higher per year). Just pointing out that there's two sides to the negotiations, so to point a finger at one guy and say "It's his fault" is kind of silly.

Once Trouba is traded, I'd imagine the contract is signed the next day (or that day, whatever)

I don't think he deserves it either. I wouldn't give him a dime more than rielly got, but hes in a strong position to make a crazy-ish ask. My guess is that's why it has come to a stand still. One side is being fairly reasonable because they have to and the other side is being completely unreasonable because they know they can.

Nothing specific has really surfaced other than that they will probably want a top 4 LHD in return if its a 1 for 1 deal. There was an article that quoted Bob MacKenzie on the last blog that basically said there are very few teams that have something and that it's not really likely that any of them want to make that kind of move.

We need good D. We have only a few of those. At this point, I would think if we could upgrade a defender at the cost of a forward it would potentially work.

Edit: I understand our goal scoring was an issue but IMO our defense is NOT a position of strength.

It will be easier to find someone to fill that void left by mccabe than it will be to fill the one that would in theory be solved by adding trouba. Although I doubt McCabe+Fasching would be enough.
