Something to note, it would appear that bridge deals are a dying breed.

Question I saw on Twitter:

Would you trade Risto for Johnny Hockey?

inb4 Calgary would never do that deal. It's just a conversation.

Also, Risto is not Ekblad and doesn't deserve that money. 6 should be his number, I'm fine with 6.5 just because I'm not losing him over .5. End of the day I think he gets 6/6

On risto...

The whole point of giving a long term contract to a player coming off an ELC is that you fully expect the deal to be a steal in a few years. (Karlsson, Mackinnon etc.).

You don't give a guy coming off his ELC a contract that values out to what his ceiling might be, which is essentially what Risto is asking for.

On the surface they are very comparable. But we can't make that trade because we would have to go find another Risto. It is hard enough trying to find a partner for him - I couldn't imagine having to find both spots.

Why would we either? Nothing against his value but that leaves you with a top pair of Kulikov and Bogosian. Sounds like a stealth tank job where you lose every game 6-5 to keep the fans happy

if they carry 7 d men

that would a lineup for the kids to all stay in the minors

Yup, I don't see any big surprises. Bailey is the only one I could see being up but if he's going to be on the 4th line I feel they'd rather him get more minutes in Rochester.

That said I think you need one of them up here and having a good year if you want playoffs. I don't think that bottom 6 is good enough and the top 6 isn't good enough to make up for that bottom 6.

That's why I ask, to see if you would. I just know saying that on a Sabres blog will draw in the other fan bases and that'll be the first and only comment

If you had a 2nd deal in place for a d-man potentially better than risto then yea absolutely. Like if Carolina had a stroke and decided to move Hanifin for Reinhart.

Which is why I thought it was a good question. Part of me says yes, part of me says no. The defense would be really bad but the offense would be great. Would need to trade for a defenseman then and give up a lot to get a good one.

Im not certain shattenkirk would extend here. I feel like if it was a real possibility they would have been all over it before draft day.

Trouba is also an option, though I don't know what WPG is looking for. Not a true, no questions asked #1 guy but then again neither is Risto

Before it's said, I still think Risto>Trouba but they aren't worlds away

I think they would want a similar D back and we can't (shouldn't?) offer that. I doubt guys in juniors would interest them.

Really?
Are u that down on Jones, or that high on Risto?
I think they're pretty comparable

Risto had a rough 2nd half last year
He's definitely not in the 7.5mil Ekblad range
Based on other contracts that have been signed,
5.5-6mil seems right to me, for 5-6yrs

- jdfitz77

IMO Jones hasn't made the improvements Risto has year to year. He's not where he should be. If he's making 5.4 Risto makes at least that. I've said all along I expect Risto to come in the 5.8-6 mil range.

I think Jones had some issues adjusting in Cbus,
But he's still pretty darn goon IMO
I'd take him here in a heartbeat, but they aren't trading him anytime soon
Obviously they like him by the looks of that contract

This could be a great underground marketing campaign idea for the new "It" movie that's supposed to be coming out next year
