If you look through their roster, it really drives home that these Red Wings aren't what they used to be. They've drowned their cap situation with guys like Nielsen (making 5.25mil for 6 years), Howard (making 5.29mil for 3 years), Kronwall (making 4.75mil for 3 years), Abdelkader (making 4.25mil for 7 years), Ericsson (making 4.25mil for 4 years) and Helm (making 3.85mil for 5 years) while still having an injured Franzen (making 3.9mil for 4 years) and an aging Zetterberg (6mil for 5 years).
These aren't the Red Wings of the past 20 years. - MaximumBone
Their playoff series' the last two years have been so anti-Red Wings. Trying to outskate Tampa while the Bolts control tempo and possession..
They just lost Frk to Carolina as well.. |

Abdelkader contract is bananas, its such a terrible move.
Then they resigned Glendening to a 4 year extension, with a 300% raise.
Ugh probably shouldnt be signing Bottom 6 guys to big money contracts. - DDM-Coga
All of Larkin, Tatar, Mrazek's contract come up for renewal before any of those other contracts end and Nyquist's comes up a year after when Howard and Kronwall's expire. Gotta imagine they're worried about their D corps' future, too. I'm sure Dekeyser, Smith, Green, and Marchenko can hold it together, but that's far from a competitive top-4 and there's not much in the way of high-end potential coming up. Maybe they trade Nyquist for one of Anaheim's elite D prospects? |

Bump PA up to the 2nd line and drop Versteeg to the 3rd line and I think the scoring would be better... Also Caggiula has looked pretty legit, could he possibly be a better option at the 4c than Letestu who doesnt offer much offensively...? |

they did. and hes deserves a shot.
but the other rookie puju should go down to start i think.
this is where losing hall hurts so much.
despite all the failures and losing, the one thing we potentially had was pretty nutty high talent depth up front that if we ever turned that corner, that was the thing that was gonna set us apart and move us into that truly elite category.
but i guess its chicken and egg that we may have never taken that step without said trade...
either way, at least until puju is seasoned, it seems now we're either a pretty standard 2 line team, or really stretching it think to try and run 3 skilled lines if we separate leon fron nuge. which we will at some point going forward. |

totally possible hes a better option than letestu. its almost foregone offensively anyway.
but ML is here for faceoffs and pk. if drake could replace that, letestu would be done here.
i think versteeg will be on the 3rd when hes healthy. |

Not with the way the 4th line likely gets played. It'd be folly to force him into the type of shutdown minutes they project to face. I think he could partner with Pitlick and Kassian to make a really fast and really aggressive 4th line, but it's unlikely it'd be well suited to heavy Dzone starts. Maybe in a year, but for now I'd prefer to avoid drowning rookies in positions where offense will be hard to come by. |

I thought that's what they were planning on using RNH for this year? More of a second line shutdown center... at least that's what I had heard off and on? It does seem like the NHL is going 4 lines deep with offense now. Players like ML seem to be a dime a dozen in the NHL. Can win draws and play the PK but not much else. I think the Oilers would be much more dangerous rolling out a 4th line that can fly and score. |

I disagree that we're suddenly just a standard two-line team. Certainly we're not AS dangerous without Hall, but our strength is still there even without Puljujarvi.
Maroon- McDavid- Eberle
Lucic- Draisaitl- Caggiula
Pouliot- Nuge- Versteeg
Pitlick- Letestu- Kassian
That's still a team with a deep offense and the capacity for six 40 point scorers (McDavid, Eberle, Lucic, Nuge, Pouliot and Draisaitl) from its forwards. The team now also has some scoring depth in guys like Caggiula, Maroon, Puljujarvi and Slepyshev. It might not look as explosive, but it's a very balanced attack that- if used correctly- would still be the biggest factor leading to this team's success. |
