You don't think Crosby makes the HHOF? - MJL
I'm surprised he is not in already. |

(It was a joke...because none of their players are currently in the HHOF).
That's why the rest of my post began with, "Realistically..." since it's not realistic for a current team to have a member of the HHOF in almost all instances. |

Which will make the "casual" fan from the USA more likely to go to a game:
"Come see them play the Edmonton Oilers."
"Come see them play NHL superstar Connor McDavid."
I'm gonna say #2. - jmatchett383
There is no question what the Flyers marketing department would use, when Edmonton comes to town. |

I agree to a point. Just feel like some teams do not to have "marketable" players for me to watch them. The Flyers rivals come to mind. Some markets need a draw. Teams like the Flyers do not. People watching and attending the games almost regardless. - mickel25
Right, you want to see them because of the rivalry. The "casual fan" is probably not aware of the rivalry. |

Agreed they would use McDavid as the draw. But how many additional tickets are getting sold in Philly just because McDavid is coming to town?
Now in other cities with lower attendance you could see a significant bump. |

I don't begrudge anyone, or hold any animosity towards anyone who is able to make huge amounts of money. Good for them. |

We were all told that, if a person has been performing in a certain position for a long time, then he is good at that position.
Therefore, John Tortarella is a good coach. - jmatchett383
Boiling it down to the essence, he wouldn't be in the NHL if he weren't. |

Gretzky is probably the best example. Him coming to LA, made them the top draw and made their tix go from undesirable to unobtainable. They sold out games coast to coast, and it had zero to do with the LA Kings' roster as a whole. |

I don't think hockey has "casual" fans. You either watch hockey and follow it or you probably don't.
I want more people to watch. Honestly, how many "casual" fans tune in now to see Crosby? Can't market someone more than he has been marketed. He is the best player.
What were the ratings for the finals last year? |

That's a hard slap in the face to the home team. "We don't give a frank about you but "marketable superstar" is coming to town so we're there!" |

I was dreaming of Tampa vs Nashville. Still say that would have been great hockey. |

I agree. I don't think the "casual fan" ever will exist for the NHL on a large scale. But that's what the NHL keeps trying to do. Every now and then, people will get excited because of the playoffs, or the Olympics, because of a great local team, or even the John Scott ASG fiasco. But for the most part, people would rather watch The Bachelor or its male equivalent than hockey. |

This is literally what the Sixers did a few years ago when Miami came in. They marketed LeBron James and the Heat. |

"Come see the bottom-4 defenseman they traded Taylor Hall for. Admire the ECHL prospect they got for a former 1st overall pick. Look, if you will, upon their bottom-6 forwards." |
