Its a prediction based on underlying numbers, not a guarantee and its not an unreasonable assumption. It's not secret the blueline as a whole is bad. Eichel going down for a while is bad. And there are question marks in net and with some players up front. Now those could go right which would put us out of the conversation but its not something you can just overlook.

This team is more talented at the top than it was a year ago, but the overall product still bleeds possession time and high danger scoring chances against. Without knowing who the team is, if an unbiased person saw that in a chart they would likely make the same guess that said team would finish dead last.

We are dead last possession right now. And have gotten 5 points from 2 players at an unsustainable rate, they aren't really that wrong

Agreed! i don't think it's a panic situation yet.
I never thought of us as a contender for the cup but definitely a playoff push team.
The silver lining of 15 and 9 being injured are we can see the red flags holding us from being a contender for the playoffs vs the cup (defensive depth).

See, I don't think it is a prediction based on the underlying numbers. He's pointing out specific things from this season already (like Gionta playing 17 mins) yet he didn't actually mention as to WHY Gionta is getting that much time. Could it be that he's actually played well? Hmmmm....

What hes pointing out is that gionta maintaining that scoring rate is highly improbable and that at some point he'll regress back to normal like he was last year when bylsma was playing him top 6 minutes for no good reason.

Same deal with Gorges yes he "shut down" mcdavid (still got killed in possession time but ill give it to him) but does anyone expect that to last 82 games?

And most of their success is coming from special teams. Just like last year this will eventually catch up with them.
