Like the Bruins and Eriksson last year

On a serious note, I do agree. However, with the addition of Provorov, Manning elevating his game (so far) and a midseason call up of Morin (possibly) moving MDZ may be more manageable while still competing in or for playoffs. I'd like to resign MDZ but his command potential scares me off sorta.

- arichardson22

Especially if he maintains it all year and than you can count on him in your 6 with a 975k cap hit. That saves a lot of money to invest somewhere else, maybe a Gostisbehre extension.

If the Flyers are in the playoff race, I'd keep MDZ and deal with it after the season.

It's like the Penguins fans who wanted to jettison Niskanen at the TDL a few years back. Yes, you're most likely going to lose him. But, he gives your team the best shot at winning, and shows that management believes in you. If you always want to get rid of pending UFAs, you will likely never win because you will not be putting your best players out there.

Do I think the Flyers can win the Cup this year? No. Do I think it's important for them to make the playoffs? Yes. And keeping MDZ gives them the best chance to do that.

Now if someone offers you a 1st round pick or a top prospect for him, I'd listen.

If Manning is playing well and say Morin is up and the team isn't missing a beat I think it would make it easier to move him no matter what. I do think he could get you a 1st rounder from a playoff team. Maybe you can get back a young 3rd line center.

The Flyers must protect only one goaltender, with either scenario ( 7F/3D or 8 F/D)
- Streit2ThePoint

so what I just read is one goalie must be exposed who is under contract for the 2017-2018 season or is a UFA at the end of this season. so if they don't re-sign one of the goalies it appears they have to expose Stolarz anyway so any way you look at it he would be exposed regardless

Yes, just like that. It didn't work, but they gave it their best shot, and I commend management for that.

Also, I wouldn't bank on a mid-season callup of Morin, and I wouldn't bank on him being handed a top-6 spot for the rest of the year if he is called up.

Won't both Mason and Neuvirth both be under contract since it is still part of the 2016/2017 season? I know the exposed player has to be under contract for next season, not sure about the protected players.
- jmatchett383

They have to have one goalie who is under contract for the '17-'18 season. Me thinks.

Other goalies that will be avaiable...Varly/Pickard, Subban, Hellebyuck/Hutchinson, Lehtonen/Niemi, Domingue, Bernier, Greiss/Halak, Grubauer, Howard/Mrazek

and you have the obvious Bishop and Fleury situations

- YuenglingJagr

Also Grubauer in Washington.

So...what happens if they don't resign one of Mason/Neuvirth? I don't think the NHL can mandate that they sign a specific player.
- jmatchett383

Stolarz would count so long as they qualify him before the ED.

iii) One goaltender who is under contract in 2017-18 or will be a restricted free agent at the expiration of his current contract immediately prior to 2017-18. If the club elects to make a restricted free agent goaltender available in order to meet this requirement, that goaltender must have received his qualifying offer prior to the submission of the club's protected list.

A lot dpends on Manning playing well all season and also the offer.

I wouldn't just move him. I would want either 1st or young 3rd line center. Maybe a player like Curtis Lazar as an example. I would want specific things in the deal if I were to move him.

Yeah. I think the Flyers will get a deal done with Mason before the season's end.

Then keep him.

Again it's early. Lots can change. I just think Manning playing really well only helps the Flyers, especially since he has such a low cap hit

So let's say the TDL is 2 days away, and you're in a playoff spot with a 5 point cushion over the 9th place team. TB calls you up with an offer of a first rounder, likely a 22-30 pick. If you make the trade, your chances of holding onto that spot immediately drop drastically. Do you do it?

there are some interesting decisions to be made. Winnipeg has 4 dmen worthy of protecting. Buff and Enstrom have to be protected because of their NMC then you have Trouba and Myers.

I don't think Manning's cap hit and MDZ are tied. It's the overall cap space that's the issue. Manning's low cap hit isn't any more significant than Provorov's or (hopefully) Morin's.

They could go the 4/4/1 route. Or, after they trade Trouba, they can go the 7/3/1 route.

No.

Because I would want more than just the 1st rounder from TB. I would probably want the Coburn deal or something close.

But say I get something like Carolina got for Sekera than I probably would.(They got a 1st and Roland Mckeown)

I do.

If Manning plays well and can be counted on for next season than that frees money to resign Gostisberhere and Mason.

If not and you think you need to retain Del Zotto than he his going to get something around 5 million in FA and probably around 4-5 years.

So, just to be clear: assuming they are in a playoff spot, but not by much, you'd intentionally make your team weaker for a late 1st rounder and a B/B+ level prospect?

I wouldn't. Unless they are out at the TDL or are getting a pick and a player who can contribute to their roster right now, I'm keeping him.

they sort of have the same issue with forwards. there are some teams that really are going to lose a good player. Luckily the Flyers aren't going to be too hurt. I mean I would be irked to lose one of Laughton, Cousins or Stolarz but it could be much worse

So, there;s no link between Konecny making the team on an ELC and MDZ? No tie between Cousins' low cap hit and MDZ?

Every cap hit is tied to every other cap hit. The low ones help, but the Flyers have a handful of players on low cap hits, Manning is just one of them.

i just say under contract...i believe the NHL uses the phrase "with term" the point is that they have to be signed through next season

I didnt really pay attention to the NHL back in 2000 but this expansion wrinkle is awesome. GMs have a lot of work to do

And with all that they are still only a little under the cap. now I know next season they will have some money come off but they will probably have to resign a goalie, resign Gostisbehere and have some money to look into FA.

I don't think there is an exact right answer. A lot depends on where the Flyers are at the TDL and who is playing well.
