Obviously there are games like that in the playoffs, but i think his point was you shouldnt plan on winning like that, consistently.

Its worth pointing out that they had the disadvantage of 5 d-men

- Sabresfan-365

I would agree with you, but teams win games like that all of the time.
I'd be willing to bet you could pick 2-3 games a night where a team who was outplayed won.

Thank you 365. I waited nearly three pages for somebody to say that.

For an extended period too, they stepped up though as a unit including lehner

Yes on any given night you can find 2 or 3 games like that. But over a full season you tend to notice that the teams at the top are winning the majority of their games the same way that can be sustained. Wins like this are bound to happen and even necessary from time to time but its not a viable game plan. Can't really go into a season saying were going to make the playoffs by playing this way.

Me neither really, once he gets a solid defence in front of him too i think the numbers will get even better. The NHL is lousy with this (the illness stuff). The entire environment and lifestyle is just damn near perfect breeding ground for all sorts of illnesses and even worse having them spread like wildfire.
- Sabresfan-365

It sounded kind of like they banned him from coming anywhere near the rest of the team until they knew he was 100% better. Probably because these guys try to fight through it and end up spreading to the rest of the locker room.

Fans have no RIGHT to anything in sports. They don't DESERVE anything, and they don't EARN anything.

Fans have the OPPORTUNITY to enjoy the diversion of following their team.

And in taking advantage of that opportunity, what people SHOULD be doing is considering their team in context, not reaching conclusions based on mere "snapshot" data.

This should be enough that I don't have to elucidate (yeah I said (frank)ing elucidate!) why I know that people who were upset after the first 6 games of the 2016-17 season were out of line.

Way too long to read, but I have a feeling this is a shot at sbroads.

I think Lehner is a solid starter. I'd like to re-sign him sooner than later so we can get him for around 3-4 million instead of 5

If he falters Lehner at 3.5 mil is still movable. I don't want him to have a good season playing 60+ games and then get 5-6 million.

Let's get this straight. 5-6 games in you can cry foul about the team as a whole, that they're going to be a "lottery team", but you'll wait until December to judge a particular player - one we know you're biased against due to the trade.

The funny part is, even with the not so great games to start the season, his numbers are pretty good in comparison to other goalies that people would consider to be toward the top of the league, like Pekka Rinne, Ben Bishop, and Luongo.

Currently if you filter the stats to guys with at least 5 games, he's 10th in sv% (.921) and 15th in GAA (2.34).

I haven't complained about the goaltender at all but I'm not going to giv him a contract because he does good for his games he's played .. Every time we do this we give a player a contract before he even proves anything

I don't think anyone said to give him an extension right this minute. But I think if his play stays like it has been the last 2 games for the most part, by Jan/Feb you should start the talks and see if you can get something worked out.

I'd offer a contract to Lehner similar to Matt Murray.

I agree.

And given the long term trend of consistent improvement there is no reason to be upset.

I'm not at all. I was actually standing up for the last minute of a game for the first time in a while.

The post that started the discussion said "sooner rather than later" which is pretty open to interpretation. However, I'm fairly certain that doesn't mean it needs to happen in the immediate future either.

I'd offer Lehner 3-4*3.5-3.75 right now.

See if he bites. It buys the sabres time to see if he is the answer. If he is gives the Sabres a great contract for a starting goalie.

I'm not directing any of this at you personally - despite some suggestion to the contrary. There is a subset of posters who I hope will stand back and notice how they feel now compared to what Homie recalls as the "Adam Mair 1C" era.

And BTW - I liked Mair.
