Dude, nobody is discounting that he's playing very well. With this said he doesn't play OT at all. Not a second. He doesn't play the power play. He's on the top pair due lack of talent on this team overall. He's there by default.

Does Du-Mulan play on the PP? He doesn't?! But, but he was Kris Letang's partner for the Stanley Cup winning Penguins. But he's not a Stanley Cup caliber top pairing d man tbh, even though he is top pair defensively at ES and PK. Someone should break this to him and the team.
Someone also needs to tell Hjalmarsson and Hamonic they're not good enough to be on top pairs....because they don't play PP. - Mononoke
ahem. dumo had a pp goal in the clinching game of the finals.
but no, i see your point. honestly, dont like him but gudas has had an extremely effective year and is turning into a very nice player for you guys. i missed the argument, but if its about not being a good defender because you arent a PP guy, that's silly |

Ok but he's averaging 14 seconds on the PP per game this season.
The point being contested was that Gudas cannot be a #2/3 if and when we are a Cup caliber team. And that he can't be a "top pairing" d without playing on the PP. And yet look at recent Cup teams and their "top pairing" guys. Guys like Dumoulin, Hjalmarsson, even Hamonic and Tanev looking further. They don't have to be superstars. It's not about being a top line talent; it's about what happens on the ice. They just have to be very effective and have top pair results and compliment well. If a player plays top pair minutes and produces top pair results...but then they're not actually good enough to play on a top pair? It's a logical leap I can't make.
It's not like Gudas couldn't play some PP2 on a weaker PP team. Flyers just so happen to have an already elite PP with some guys named Ghost, Streit, Provorov, and Sanheim and Myers coming. Unheard of depth to push players down is a good thing. Plus, I don't think some people actually look at rosters league wide. Paul Martin and Justin Braun are on the Sharks' 2 top pairings. That's a Cup caliber team. And Gudas is better than both. It's just some arbitrary concoction. |

i dont know if id say gudas is better than braun just yet. braun is sneaky good. but i get exactly what you mean.if anything, a guy like that brings in elements that are absolutely necessary to a top 4 pairing, which are usually otherwise missing in a lot of your prototypical powerplay type guys.

pairings themselves are largely semantic. a guy on your second pairing may be better than a guy on your first. if gudas is your overall best defenseman, i think that team will be hard pressed to win a cup. however, i see no reason why he couldnt be on one of the top 2 pairings and the team be just fine if other things are in place. its not like you're logging top 4 minutes with deryk engelland.

The way the Flyers are building, it's to potentially have multiple top pairings. And it's not cut and dry which is actually the top pairing in scenarios like this. Is the Sharks' top pairing with Burns or Vlasic? Really in a true Cup caliber defense corps, you probably have your "#1," but your top 4 should be pretty interchangeable ideally in ES usage and production, with enough skill variance to divvy up PP/PK minutes. And in the end, it's just about good results and who gives them to you, arbitrary titles be damned. |
