Look at the flyers they have three guys that are absolute stud and they have a defenseman that's going to be probably the number one in points for D someday

Once Moulson, Gionta, and Ennis come off the books that gives us 13 mil to round out the roster with the middle talent that we are missing. Its all gonna be ok

I was saying more of the high-end top 10 guys in the last few years, because after that it's really a crap shoot where you have your Marek Zagrapans. And you know what the player is when he's been in the NHL for 5 years. You don't necessarily know what you're going to get from a 4th overall from last year. But that it should be a lot.

I don't think any team could withstand their top 4 players going out. The old vets don't play that much to warrant freaking out about. Gionta plays enough, but a) he's been good and b) he'll still be here for another year or 2 probably at a reduced rate of $1.5M or $2M. Moulson is only playing up because Eichel and Kane are out. No, this is not an elite team. I really don't know if and or why you're expecting that from this team. It takes time to build an elite team. Look at Chicago, they were the laughingstock for about 10 years after their early 90's success until Kane came to town. Same with Pittsburgh, the team was going to move and they lucked in to Crosby. The Oilers are maybe a good team, but they've been atrocious for the last 10 years. The Panthers came bursting on to the scene and then disappeared for like 15 years. The Lightning were not a good team for a long time either. Need I go on? No teams make the turnaround that fast and be consistently good. Some teams might get lucky and string a stupidly lucky season together and make the playoffs like the Flames and Avs have done recently, but they've come back down to Earth.

Edit: Where's Kaiser's post from last week about patience? Or mine from last year about this time. His was more concise whereas mine was much more rant-y.

Sure, they also drafted and developed the talent they had. They didn't try and take shortcuts and deplete prospect depth.

Can you point out the blockbuster trades Pitt, Chicago, EDM made in the middle of the rebuild?

Hell, EDM waited until this offseason to do it and now they are looking great

Koekkoek looks like a guy that's taking a long time to develop, he played some in the playoffs last year and didn't look outmatched. But yeah, generally you expect a player taken top 5 to be very good for you.

So it shouldn't really be a surprise when they play well. On the same side, you shouldn't be really that upset if they don't turn out. It's not the NFL, the miss rate on NHL prospects is really high even for the best scouting teams about 90% due to the age of the drafted players. They really should push the age back to 19. Sure you get a Tom Brady every now and then in the NFL, but it's not nearly as bad as the NHL.

And if you're taking guy outside the top 10 you're very happy indeed if they make any kind of impact for your team sometime down the road.
