I continue to be shocked about how quickly people want to dismiss the electoral college. It's literally the linchpin of the entire democracy lol. - Cape Breton Bruins
most (frank)ers dont even realize the electoral college is equivalent to each states members in congress, and also those crack pipe smokers in the district of columbia

Not sure why I am shocked by anything at this point but the most insane part of all of this to me is that Trump is still as vengeful and petty as ever on twitter
I legit cant believe his people allow him to keep being this way. it would be hilarious if real poop wasnt at stake

where's the benefit in giving people in the middle of the country several times more value than people along the coast?
The electoral college system made sense when a direct democracy wasn't feasible, but it's definitely out-dated now.

It's such a mess dude. Trump has done nothing but appoint people directly from the swap. I don't think he thought for even a second he would ever win.

It's about insuring extremely strong opposition at all times. Anyway pointing to the popular vote is useless because nobody campaigned to win it because it doesn't get you elected. It's completely hypothetical to assume the results would be identical if the campaigns tried to win the popular vote.
I think is to strike a balance between highly populated areas (coasts) and the rest of the country, so that there is an opportunity to elect a President from either party. Otherwise whomever the "coasts" wanted (always Democrats) would get in. - D0PPELGANGER
It would be a real shame if the majority of the population got the president they voted for in a democracy.

Why ensure a strong opposition if it doesn't represent the will of the people?
To your second point, that's the issue. Platforms should be built with the will of the people in mind, not with the intention of gaming the system.
In any case, it's going to be a very interesting 8 years, seeing what unbridled capitalism will do.
