JT will ensure another conservative government if he doesn't act decidedly on all of this.
Also no article ever explains if these folks were in America illegally? Or were they asylum seekers there as well which would be understandable considering the conditions in Haiti. - Cape Breton Bruins
From what I've read/seen/heard the vast majority of these illegal asylum seekers are Haitians that were granted "temporary protected status", after the earthquake in Haiti, and they now seem to think they're in danger of being asked to return to their own Country.......... which was the intended purpose of being granted TPS, but would rather come to Canada after PM Selfie McSelfieface made his ill advised tweet, that made everyone believe that Canada had an "Open Border" policy.

Trump isn't the problem with republicans, he's a symptom of that party's illness. Individuals may differ, but as a whole, that party cares more about winning than actually helping people. They put all their attention into data and gerrymandering so they could win more, and in many cases, use their power for personal gain. Trump epitomizes that. - Feeling Glucky?
Wanting to win re-election is not a Republican thing, it's a Politician thing, all parties in both Canada and the USA are just as guilty of this desire to live off the public dime.
Same with gerrymandering in the USA...........both parties, when in power, do their best to re-design their districts to gain an advantage .......... it's not a Republican thing. |

I never said it was. It's just that the Republicans seem too focused on the "winning" thing, and couldn't give a rats ass about the "serving the public" aspect.
Gerrymandering is also something both parties do, no doubt. But again, the way Republicans do it, since the mid-aughts is far more egregious, which is why it's an issue that the supreme court is looking into now.
The "both parties do it" argument is a cop out. It's part of the Republican propaganda, aimed at dissuading "the middle" from voting, and it's something that's been working. They've figured out that a platform based almost entirely on tax breaks for billionaires isn't going to win over many rational undecided voters... so their goal is to take them out of the picture, and just pander to people who'll vote republican no matter what.

Funny how its only the one party that seems more interested in making it difficult for people to vote. |

Which is fine as long as the PM speaks up and lays out his plan. Crickets thus far. |

I've had to show my government issued ID every time I've ever voted. That should be the only requirement IMO. |

If we can take 25,000 Syrians we can defiantly help settle a few thousand Haitians. Problem is ignoring active border laws which could lead to a problem we might have trouble handling.
Tell us what the deal is so the people paying the bills know what's up. |

It's the Man's job afterall. It'd bordering on a state of emergency. Name the issue, state your plan, allocate the funds and work your plan to settle the folks who need asylum. |

Dude's already racked up a 30 billion dollar budget deficit so I doubt he's concerned about who pays bills and how.
As for his plan he's already stated that everyone is welcome so they're taking him up on it.
Pretty clear plan as far as I can tell. |

I agree the issue needs to be addressed, but "state of emergency" is hyperbolic, IMO.
You have articles like the one from the Sun that are throwing out a figure of 60,000 illegal immigrants to rile people up, but that number is pure BS, which, given the source, is unsurprising.
It's estimated that now, at the height of the issue, 150 people are crossing the border per day. Multiply that by 365, and you get under 55000, so even a very generous rounding doesn't get you to 60k... and factor in the effect of winter, and the number drops.
The people that are "a drain on the system" are the ones making themselves known to authorities, so while the backlog is worrying, and will likely get longer, they'll in the system... and what's required is more people working on the job.
There are undoubtedly criminals in the group that won't be allowed in under normal circumstances, but if, say, 40,000 people come in this year, how many can you really expect to be criminals?(honest question, any numbers on how likely a refugee is to be, or become a criminal in their new country?)
And while these people may be a drain on welfare at first, they didn't come all this way for a handout, they came to start a new life. Studies show that refugees, over time contribute more than they cost.
So yes, the government needs to take action to control the situation... but it's not a crisis by any means. |
