For the most part I think he's done a fine job and been pretty flexible on things. I do think that flexibility on issues hasn't translated well to his base, or to people who voted for him on very specific issues, though.

Well, some people do. Pretty much the only reason the Conservatives ever win is because the left is split between the NDP and Libs. And knowing that you have a fallback vote in a ranked ballot makes you feel like you can actually vote for who you want, rather than just against some perceived or real evil.
