To be fair, any party that chooses Trump to be their #1 guy should just disband. Clearly have no interest in serving the public. - Feeling Glucky?
The "Party" does NOT choose their Party's Candidate for POTUS, the people/voters do, in the Primary system.
Establishment Republicans did everything they could to dissuade voters from supporting DJT in the Republican Primaries.
I think you've conflated how Canadian political parties choose their leaders, with how the US system works.
For example, HRC is not the "Leader" of the Democratic party in the States, there is actually two leaders, Chuck Schumer in the Senate, and Nancy Pelosi in the house.
If I'm incorrect on this, I'm sure one of our American posters will set this straight.

I may be wrong, but don't you have to register as part of a party to vote in the primaries?

Yes, anybody can register as a "democrat" or "republican" or "independent"...... and I believe you have to be registered in order to vote in a primary .............. BUT there are "open" primaries that don't require voters to be affiliated with any one political party in order to vote.
Registering to vote does not make you a party member ........

Point is the Republican Party did not choose DJT, as you inferred, registered Republican party supporters and registered independents, that voted in the primary system selected him to be their candidate for POTUS.
Party Leaders in the USA are in the Senate and the House, and the POTUS is not the leader of either of the parties....... much different system than ours.

I see that point but also how the (frank) do you lose to Donald Trump and plus the litany of other losses nation wide in terms of the Senate, House and Governor ships?
I think they got cocky down the stretch and the refuse to look inward to formulate change that appeal to a broader base imo and it may continue to cost them. And yes I am aware of the popular vote and how much political capital California has.
The exposed corruption against Bernie during the primaries certainly played a part and when people shout "RACISTS" for why Trump won then how do you explain why so many people who voted for Obama twice jumped ship?
Usually here in Canada as I'm sure you are aware, when a party losses so many seats in parliament there is a purge of those who were in power at the time. But here we are with Pelosi, Waters and Schumer. It seems odd to me. Donna Brazile still connected as well after getting caught red handed forwarding debate questions to the Hilary camp before a CNN debate.
I think people view the party in its current state as untrustworthy even if their beliefs line up more with the democrats than the republicians. A protest vote for some I suppose not unlike what happened here in Alberta in 2015 when 44 years of Tory leadership got decimated by the far left NDP after a series of financial scandals built up with a sluggish economy.
Not really, in Canada, our Party Leaders can end up as the PM, if their party wins the most number of seats in HOC after an election. If they don't win the most number of seats, they remain the leader of their party ......... unlike the USA where the losing candidate for POTUS does not become the leader of the party they were the candidate for.

Are there figures on Obama supporters that voted for Trump?
I think the reason for the Trump win was that republicans came out to vote for him, while a lot of Democracts who were pro-bernie were incensed and just didn't show up to vote.
Which is also very, very stupid when Trump is the alternative.
