No one, or nothing "assisted me" besides working and making common sense decisions.
I never was offered or even ever considered asking my family for "assistance" in any form, I knew they couldn't afford to help me out so I never would have taken if offered.
Myself, I'm armed with a grade 12 education, and yes, back when I graduated you could get a lot more jobs than today with just a HS education.
People have to realize that they make their own choices, and it's not someone else's fault for those decisions.
Years ago when I was single, during the "70's OPES Oil crisis" practically everyone my immediate peer group were all buying Corvettes, because they "wanted them" and were going on "Corvette Trips" down to the USA, and I could have chosen to do the same, but I had a long term view on where I wanted to be when I retired so I bought a brand new VW Rabbit, and did all the maintenance on it myself, and ran that car for 10 years. Just that choice alone saved me thousands of dollars every year......... I could have "kept up with the Jones" and avoided the joking I took ............ but in the long run I'm better off, in my opinion.
If someone finds it hard to buy, and pay off a house while living in Down town toronto, then perhaps they need to make the hard choice of moving somewhere, where they can afford to live within their means ........... or do whatever it takes to increase their income ........ remaining in the status quo and accepting defeat is not the best choice. - D0PPELGANGER
the 70's?
So you don't think the economic reality has shifted much in the 40+ years since you were entering the job market as a young person?
Again, you have failed to name a single entry level job available today that a young person can easily acquire and save money to pay for an education. |

Ya know, assistance isn't always given to you by somebody. Sometimes assistance can simply be luck.
But I'm hardly surprised after reading your musings over the last however many years that your advice to people less fortunate is that they should just try to be more like you. |

*sigh* can't believe i am going to allow myself to be dragged into this but in all of his ramblings about "putting your head down and getting to work" did he ever account for the fact that HS/college students are competing with grown ass people for those "summer" jobs. not to mention the field of applicants is much larger than it was #backintheday.

Because the way you're treated in society is greatly influenced by your race and also gender, unfortunately.
So by being born a white man, you've already won a genetic lottery. By not being born into poverty, you've also won an economic lottery.
These are massive factors that you had no control over, and established the groundwork for you to live a decent life... and it's also exactly what "SJWs"(or people with a social conscience) mean by the term privilege. - Feeling Glucky?
Wow, is this how you've been indoctrinated, and now actually believe this progressive crap?
People who use the term "Privilege" are the one who've been told they have no control over their station in life, and therefore society is "fixed or rigged" against them, and they fall hook line a sinker, for the progressive ideology playbook, that uses "identity politics" to segment society and create divisions.
They also look to progressive politicians to redistribute wealth, by taxing the "rich" and "big business" who "don't pay their fair share" and creating all kinds of social programs for the people in society who feel they deserve a better living than they have now ............. but are unwilling to work harder and longer for it themselves......... and then eventually end up dependent on government programs, and feel even more trapped than before.
Just take a look at what's happening in Atlantic Canada ........... the Liberals campaigned on reducing the requirements for EI benefits, for workers in the fishing industry.......... and have carried out those promises.
So NOW, the fisheries have to bring in Temp. Foreign Workers, because White "privileged" Canadians now prefer to collect EI than to go to work and earn a living for themselves ......... and you can just bet they'll vote liberal again in 2019 ..........
The previous Government required new entrants and re-entrants to the labour market to work for at least 910 hours, in the previous year in order to qualify for EI benefits.
Tru-D'Oh! reduced that to between 420 and 700 hours, depending on the unemployment rate in the region.
PM Selfie McSelfieface also eliminated the rules that required "privileged" Canadians to accept employment at lower wages and at further distances from home the longer they received EI, to encourage them to seek employment and thus reduce the fisheries needs depend on TFW, and reduce the burden on the taxpayer.
This is just one shining example of how you progressives see the world, because you've swallowed the progressive dogma, and progressive Politicians use the same to exploit you for their political gain, and not for the benefit of Canada overall.
Now I know you won't take my word for it, so look it up yourself.
Do a search on the "Westmorland Fisheries" the company, last year after the progressive liberal government in Ottawe made their changes to EI, to ensure their re-election in Atlantic Canada, they were forced to apply for permission to bring in over 200 temporary foreign workers, despite the fact that there were over 700 "privileged" Canadians living within 40 km of Cap-Pelé, collecting EI benefits.

Well in the long run, the sacrifice paid off ......... there was enough money saved to pay for three University degrees, without borrowing a single dime, and with zero student debt, in my family............. and of the group of guys in my peer group, at the time, who all bought Corvettes, none of them have any children who went to University.

I'm not completely blind to the fact that times have changed, it is much harder to find "summer jobs" but there are some out there for students .......... just one example, I have a friend who has a daughter who spent her summer, last year, planting trees out west. Yes it's hard work, but not to many pampered children nowadays would consider doing that, but it's a well paid job for those who want to be a "maker" in their life and not a "taker".
If any of you know a student who is motivated to get up from the couch, turn off the X box for this summer ........... pass this along.

Totally missed the point.
I told you this happened back when I was single, in the 70's, and you assumed brand new Corvettes. But you had to focus on that, but not the point I made.
I choose not to go along with the pack, and decided to buy a VW, and save a lot of money over the ten years I ran that car.
Oil changes, brake jobs and most other maintenance, done on my own also saved big bucks.
I still my own Oil Changes and brake jobs to this day.
A brake job can cost you somewhere between 3 or 4 hundred bucks today .......... It costs me less than 100 bucks. Why would anyone take their car in to have a brake job done?? You could train a monkey to do a brake job, on most vehicles today. |

This columnist must be joking .......... and seeing how it was published on the first day of this Month, it was to be.
President wanted: Experience needed
Trump’s having so much trouble because all his expertise is in business, not government
It should be a mandatory requirement for any national leader, and for voters when they pick one.
The failed first 60 days of U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration is a case study in putting someone in charge of government who has zero experience in government................... read it all at http://www.torontosun.com...-wanted-experience-needed |
