How did people farm before HockeyBuzz and Twitter?? - twiztedmike
Using a crop rotation method typically involving a straw-heavy cereal grain, a legume like chickpeas or lentils (due to their production of micronutrients), a crop such as Canola or Mustard that can be hard on the soil, and a single year of chemfallow to help replenish the nutrient content of the soil.
A mixture of nitrogen and phosphorous, weighted specifically for the soil in each field is applied with the seed, with placement being of vital importance. Too close to the seed and you'll burn the plant and kill it. Too far and it won't get the nutrients it needs until it's too late.
Okay I'm done before I get way too carried away into the technical poop. This isn't even the start.

If irrigation techniques like this never developed we might never have gotten past clubbing each other with sticks and rocks
Which is kind of sad, in a way
Big hairy troglodytes like WaterBoy and dt99999 would have thrived in those conditions and people like crims would have been eaten
Yea man. I'm excited for the US to flood Canada with cheap goods so our farmers go bankrupt and we're entirely dependant on trade for our goods.
Can't see that backfiring at all.
Also, lol @ you talking about protecting millionaires. - Feeling Glucky?
Guess you don't much about Canadian Dairy Farmers, who constitute ....... because the majority owners Dairy farms are millionaires, thanks to the protection of their industry.
Why should roughly 20% of Farmers in Canada have Government protection, Fixed market, fixed prices?
While the remaining 80% of Farmers must compete of the world market, and world market prices?
SM has, for decades, hindered all international trade deal negotiations .... because no other Country projects this segment of the farming industry. Pork, Beef, Grain and all other segments of the farming industry competes on an equal basis with the rest of the world ................ so why should poultry and dairy farmers, in Canada, need protection, and why do Canadians have to subsidize them?
Australia and New Zealand both had similar protections for their respective poultry and dairy farmers, but got rid of those subsidizes
Born and raised in grain farming, organizations like the Canadian Wheat Board kept a lot of really terrible farmers afloat for a very long time.
These guys held the industry back for decades with their mismanagement of soil and atrocious business practices. Since we entered a more open market, there are a lot fewer small farmers and a lot fewer government subsidies at all level, because the guys that are left don't need it.
The larger farms also provide more jobs for more people rather than just having thousands of little 1000 acre farms.
The dairy industry in this country is a leech. - BINGO!
And the poultry industry too.
If anyone just checked (online) when in the USA, you'd see Boneless, skinless chicken breast usually around the $1.67 per pound mark.
In Canada, the same Boneless, skinless chicken breast will usually cost $3.99, when on sale.

If you've ever been into a grocery store south of the border, you may have noticed that milk and cheese are notably cheaper in the Land of the Free. There are often more choices, too and fancy imported cheeses are easier to come by. If you ever thought this price difference was some kind of lactose-influenced hallucination, you're not crazy—Canadians do pay more for dairy.
One of the main reasons we pay up to three times more for milky-goodness is because we're living under the thumb of a powerful dairy cartel that enjoys the full protection of the Canadian government.
Navigating strange subsidies is tough for governments—it's hard to improve things for one set of people without screwing another over. Getting Canada's dairy farmers off the public teet must feel like a chicken-and-egg problem. Indeed, it is just that—poultry and eggs are supply managed too.

Several studies have argued that the supply management system pushes up dairy prices for Canadian consumers. A recent study by the Conference Board of Canada estimated Canadians pay 60 cents more for a one litre carton of whole milk than Americans and $1.50 more for a one-pound package of butter than Australians, which has a deregulated dairy system. The OECD estimates dairy prices in Canada are more than double the world market.

America is our largest trading partner, if there were no protections in place, they could very easily crush these industries in Canada, at which point we'd be entirely reliant on them for these products.

Do you think that's a good position to be in? - Feeling Glucky?
How come the Pork, Beef and Grain farmers in Canada are not "crushed"? They have no protections in place, and compete on the open market with their American competitors.
Why you want to protect Millionaire Dairy farmers, and pay higher prices for their products, is beyond me.

Because those industries are stronger here than dairy.
The US has a history of crushing other countries dairy industries.
Also, how will students afford school without summer jobs milking cows?
Man you're so out of touch. When was the last time you were at a Canadian Dairy Farm?
I've been recently.........on of my Inlaw's son runs one in Southen Ontario, and it's pretty much automated.
The cows ca walk into an automated milker anytime they want, the feeders are all automated, the barn ventilation system.......... you name it, all automated.
The automated milk tanks "call" for the truck to come once they reach certain capacity .......... one or two guys can operate the whole set up.

Can you site some examples of the US "crushing other countries dairy industries"?
Even if that is true, are you not in favour of lower prices for Canadians? Also you've not explained why you're in favour of protecting the Dairy Millionaires, who have one of the strongest lobbying organizations in Canada ......... I thought you didn't like lobby groups?
I guess you're also in support of Dairy Millionaires "crushing" Canadians with their higher prices.
Because of our highly regulated, government-enforced dairy market, put in place by Pierre Trudeau in 1971, Canadian families pay about 40% more for milk, cheese, yogurt, butter and other items from the dairy case than they would in a freer market.http://www.torontosun.com...air-to-canadian-consumers
