Also worth noting: Slavery was a byproduct of war for most of it's history. Rome eventually realized that taking slaves was a good reason for war, but they didn't target any specific group. The church eventually made it a sin to take christian slaves, so europeans decided to start taking "heathen africans" as slaves, and that's where the racially driven part of it starts.

Slavery was always wrong. The slavery in the US was doubly so, because of the racial aspect of it, especially in a nation that was founded on the idea that all men were made equal.
