It's more/all Shanahan that I'm praising, as I said on my edit, it was him having some frank conversations with Leaf ownership about rebuilding thru the draft. They never wanted to do it because they didn't think the fans could stomach it and they wanted to fill their pockets.

Shanahan said he sat down with Leaf owners and said he'd only accept if they did it on his terms, which is what your seeing. I don't believe for a second that's what they wanted to do but they hadn't had any success any other way so they caved.
