I agree with the first part, but i think it would send a poor message to the fans and most importantly the players if the management has given up on the season. - dbot

I have no problem with them being here next year, I just don't want them re-signed. I want to trade them at TDL of their final year.
The real question is what the (frank) do you do with Eriksson? - A_SteamingLombardi
$6M for 6 years
He's getting paid $8M this and next season. |

I still expect him to turn it around, but he is looking more and more like our version of Clarkson. |

Jim's going to build a wall around Rogers.
Keep the other teams out. That will give us the best chance to win.

Trade Edler, Tanev, Hansen, Dorsett and baertschi. Buyout Sbisa. Sign a bunch of free agents. Send all the picks back to juniors or AHL (European). Another losing season then bring up previous years top picks. Resign the sedins one year 1 million each. - manvanfan
Sure. Why not. Then only 3,000 fans watch games next year. Aquillini moves the team to Seattle. Do you even know this market? |

Definitely agree about Eriksson.
The thing with me and the Sedins is they need to move into the shadows. The team can't rely on them for anything that is just delaying things.
The younger guys have got to figure their own style and not rely on the twins and the cycle game - VANTEL
Eriksson does not have enough speed to make the Sedin line work. The Sedins are too slow to play together so try splitting them up. They are both very skilled and smart and can still add value to separate lines
One of the most amazing plays I've ever seen in my 50+ years is Henrik backhanding a saucer to Daniel while the puck was ringing the boards a foot off the ice. I think Daniel roofed it just before it hit the ice. Unreal |

these teams are coming into our building. they're bringing their 1st over alls, their big tough defenders, their stellar coaching. sure some of them are going to lose... i assume. but they're coming here and taking our wins. |

no.
There's more to it than bums in seats. It's important but you are over simplifying it.
If canuck management keeps going down the path they are taking then the end result will be the same. 3,000 fans.
You can generate a hell of a lot of excitement from fans by compiling a young, dynamic team that might not win many games but at least entertains the paying customers.
We saw it when burkie was putting his team together. Not many wins but fans took notice of the young, likable team.

I'm not going to speak for Lefty but as I understood the conversation was about him admiring the leafs for finally pressing the reset button and hoping that the Canucks can do the same.
Moving contracts is one element of rebuilding and you are right it can be difficult but I think the bigger indictment of mgmt not deciding to rebuild is signing and acquiring players like Miller, Eriksson, Sutter, gudbransen as well as taking shortcuts like baertcshi, etem, clendening, granlund in the hope that they will accelerate the "rebuild". - belcherbd
Free agents don't cost us draft picks but if things work out, they can get traded for draft picks. There will be hits and misses in this department but I'd like to add a decent free agent every season actually. Even Eriksson's contract has openning clauses when the Sedins retire. Free agents are a part of the rebuilding through the draft process imo. Trading for vets is not but rading young players for young players that will stay a part of this team's next generation while we wait for the Sedins to retire is not a bad thing either. (Guddy).

i'd rather stay away from tier 1 free agents for a couple/few seasons.
add the mid/lower tier free agents and sign them to deals that are easily movable at tdl.
some other team did that to some success (off the ice not on). |

I seriously don't understand your angle? I have no issue with the Sedin deals, they were trying to elongate their competitive window. What's happening now is it's just time to rebuild, let the twins ride out their contract and say thanks, it's been great.
Hockey is a fluid sport, things change. I don't give a poop about the past, I care about the future. - LeftCoaster
That is one of my points. You are ok with signing those contracts and they stand in the way of this phase you think we have should have started. It conflicts.
Another point is you admire Toronto for not deviating from the re-build after 2 seasons. It's a little early for that don't you think. Lets see if they stick to the plan first.

Haven't gone to 17 yet? The other day in franchise mode I took the Ducks and traded away Perry, Getzlaf, Kesler, Bernier, and Bieksa in a bunch of trades for 1sts, 2nds, Kucherov, Vasilevsky, and Zebanejad. Team still made the playoffs as one of the top teams in the league, and I had 3 1sts and 3 2nds in the draft. |

AGreed.
you can't really compare 2 franchises like Van and Tor.
They are/were in different stages.
I see JB as comparable to the stage when Nonis/Burke was brought in. Still competitive (at least trying to be), still trying to win. It's unclear how that plays out.
Shanahan/Lou were brought in with the specific mandate to tear it down. JB was not. If things continue to go south, our next GM might just be tasked with that job.
I like the idea of bringing in new blood every year as well. |

In a democratic league wins are a right of every team, regardless of skill, stature, or position. Not just for a privileged few.
Wins should not be some unattainable dream. But rather a reasonable expectation of a fan base that has endured so many lows but yet has risen to such great heights.

I agree free agents don't cost anything and can be used to acquire players/picks. Overpaid players who have NTC's makes it more difficult of course.
