Yep, and that takes time to build. Look at the teams you just mentioned, back when the most successful team in recent history was at its height, those teams were stuck in the middle of their rebuild, they WERE TERRIBLE. And they're rebuild took much longer, the Penguins at that time had Malkin, Crosby, Fleury and I believe Letang and Orpik at that time and each time they came to Buffalo, you felt like it was a win in the bank, Chicago, I won't even get into.
You just cited the good goaltending and puck possesion, that leads to wins, but it's going to take TIME to build that.
If the game was called then like it is now, you wouldn't have a 40 goal scorer on the third line, even with all that talent. To be honest I don't think they were all that talented, it was just a perfect storm of how the team was built and the league cracking down on interference. Pretty sure league wide scoring is down when compared with that year. Someone can check me on that as I'm just going with my gut. - gcomella34
So much of this!!!
Buffalo caught lightning in a bottle and good ole GMDR was too afraid to add that one piece that would have put them over the edge... |

...a coach who has his team passing back to the goalie every 20 seconds.. - feetontheair22
But you already got the one point, not sure why a coach wouldn't play to win in OT rather than a shootout. Esp w Lehner in net, no offense. |

Burmistrov and Trouba both reportedly in heated meeting with Chevy: they detest Trevor Olfert (Jets organ player) and demand trade to more sedate arena environment.

Its his second year in the league. Calm down.
He can still get better.
But apparently not, he is almost 24. We're so F(*^D - ImThatGuy
I was all right at first but now i'm worried
he was rated the best player in the draft but yet everyone in this draft class is producing more than him right now
and he was older than everyone else
and all the scouts said he was ready for the NHL
But everyone thinks he'll be fine when Jack comes back which is absolute horsepoop
We drafted a franchise player not this bullpoop

Sure, and I agree it will help. But there's little to suggest this team is on its way to becoming a serious contender. Very little.
This is a 3 line, top 4 D league. And we have neither right now - sbroads24
Really because I see a pretty good top 3 line team and a blue line that is playing tenfold better than last season and improving everyday.
Say goodbye to Ennis in the top 9 and find his replacement and I think you have 3 really good lines.

It's sad really, the NHL just doesn't get it. Two things bring fans, fights and goals. They're doing their dead level best to eliminate BOTH. I understand the fighting going away, I may not like it but I understand it.
I was just looking it up...
2005 - 06: You had SEVEN players in the NHL go over 100 points, two OVER 120. Incredible.
2014 - 2015 - ONE went over 100. The next closest was 13 away.
Offense sells and excites, they need to start calling penalties like they did that year. That will bring more fans. Yes I know the purists HATE me for that. But casual fans are what generate the revenue. Just ask the NFL. |

Early in the season the Sabres were routinely passing back to Lehner. The point was to make a change and still keep possession of the puck but it hardly worked to plan.
Last night they had 8 shots on goal. They attacked, which is much different than they were doing. |

No kidding!
But GMTM wasted a third round pick on Vesey but wouldn't send a 3rd to Edmonton for a guy that is KHL bound...

Thank you for the clarification. My point was just that OT is for winning, you've already gotten the one point, not sure why a coach would not press and try to win it, esp at home. I watched the OT and the Sabres were def trying to win. That one save Condon made after it hit the crossbar and fell straight down then hit the post again was pretty sweet. |

No problem!
The best part of the OT was Risto making Karlsson look bad twice in like a 20 second time span. |

We have a top 6. Right now 2 of those 6 have been hurt for all but the 1st half of the 1st game. Moulson was a nice story in the beginning of the year but I didn't think he was going to return to a 20 goal scorer.
IMO, Jack and ROR and Kane all being back changes things because it takes pressure off other lines and lets us open up the system. We still NEED a top 6 player, maybe 2. We got one this offseason and it has been so far so good but another one is needed. We NEED a solid 3rd line. I like Larsson, Foligno I've never been high on, and Gionta's contract ends this year. I was hoping one of Fasching, Baptiste, Bailey, Carrier would play themselves onto that line and maybe they still will. I'm not as low on the defense, but you are right, 0 goals from them isn't a good thing. Need at least one who is an offensive presence and a PP guy. Lastly, Ennis hasn't scored much and that's disappointing. I want him to play well and he has but he's not getting much offense from playing well. I want to say it'll come but I've been saying that for a while now. |

Bernier was a piece acquired when they sold off Campbell. Given that they were in the middle of a President's Cup run I'd consider that a piece for the playoffs, any player you add has to be considered that especially if you're surrendering your soon to be UFA PP QB.
That's why I include him. |

I don't think he comes up until next year. That slide room becomes more and more important as the Sabres cap gets tighter.
Really wish Vesey was in blue and gold right now. Oh well. |
