Then you would complain that whoever the GM is, traded away the prospect pool...

It's just a hypothetical to shoot the chit about, nothing else to do today. But it would be interesting to see the team that would be iced by now if it were just our guys via draft.

Just more things for certain people to argue about!

True, can't hypothetically say we wouldn't have got Eichel without hypothetically saying we couldn't have won the lottery

Agreed, it is fun to think about. Id still do the ROR trade 7 our of 7 times. The kane trade, meh, don't really care either way. I don't really think GMTM has done an amazing job but I also don't think he's done as bad as others think. Some of it is just bad luck:
Eichel getting hurt
Getting Eichel instead of McDavid
Reinhart starting off slow
Bogo getting hurt
Lemieux and or Zads supposedly not wanting to be here
O Reilyl hurt

This is just to start. One word: Buffalo

Yakupov looks to be scratched.

Against Buffalo of all teams he can't get into the lineup...

I'm trying to be fair to Murray since it's easy to look at things in hindsight. Most of us would have made the ROR trade 10 out of 10 times at this point seeing what a win he's turning out to be for us. But to be honest, I thought all of Murray's acquisition trades were head scratchers. I loved the Miller Ott trade, he got great value in that one. But my initial impressions of the Kane, RoR, Lehner, and Fashing trades was that we way overpaid, and now it looks like only the RoR trade seems to have been worth it.

I am not a defender of Murray

but

the Kulikov was a good trade.

We need a second d man that can kind of shut down, and play 23 minutes a night if needed.

Plus we moved up to get Rasmus Asplund who has top 6 upside

I Will tune in to the game tonight. If it's a good game, I will watch. If we stink, I will play a video game or read a book.

Bold prediction: our second pp unit does not score, but a defenseman finally gets one in.

I still think Fasching has yet to be determined. Lehner Im still okay with (barring he gets better at shootouts). Kane was overpayment but the players that were dealt on our end werent really a big deal to me.
At the end of the day, youre right in the fact that murray seems to be determined to get the players he wants and overpays if he has to, to get them.

Yeah, I left out the Pysyk/kuli trade in my comment above because Kuli hasn't been at all disappointing, I rather like his shutdown toughness. I just hope we don't lose him for nothing at the end of this season.

Actually, if GMTM didn't make a move, then the Islanders would've changed their mind and give us the Dal Colle pick instead of the 1st rounder the following year. GMTM would then take the #2 and #5 overall to move up and get the #1 from Florida and draft Ekblad. Ekblad would have an immediate impact and would've moved the Sabres up a few spots in the standings and we would've ended up finishing where Edmonton did in 2015, meaning we would've won the Lottery and drafted McDavid. Then players would be demanding trades left and right to play with Ekblad and McDavid. Jamie Benn would threaten to sit out and Dallas would ultimately settle to move Benn to the Sabres for Tyler Myers. Panarin would've turned down Chicago and sign with Buffalo. This opportunity would be too good for Patrick Kane to turn down and would choose to turn down Chicago to come home. Effin GMTM. We'd have at least one cup by now and Mark Pysyk would have a Conn Smythe to put on his shelf. I'm drunk.

I still think he gets extended before trade deadline day and we protect 4 d men, if we don't make a trade

I am not sure murray would have taken Ekblad at 1

In a recent interview with WGR550 radio, Buffalo GM Tim Murray said that Ekblad, Leon Draisaitl, Sam Reinhart and Sam Bennett are “all at the top of the draft.”

“One is a defenceman who at the end of the day could be become a franchise defenceman. He may be a solid, very solid, two-way defenceman that plays a ton of minutes. I’m not sure if he has the dynamic kind of pace to him to be a franchise kind of player, but he’s going to be a helluva player. He’s going to be a really, really good defenceman for a long time in the league so he’s a consideration for the top pick.

I didn't think of the extension route to be honest. Mostly, because Im not sure if
1.) he wants to play for us
2.) wants to test free agency
3.) sign him for the right amount

He only fetches a 2nd if we're selling at the deadline. The big thing is where will we be? The last thing this team needs is a late run to 9th place and we don't sell our UFA assets at the deadline, it would be a worse case scenario. I really hope they make the decision by Jan 1st to be serious about playoffs (making trades or doing whatever you have to in order to make this happen) or full tank mode, anything else is unthinkable.
