Evander Kane has scored more than 20 goals once.

Trading a top 3 D for him is asinine.

is it Tuesday?

Not necessarily. Someone young that can be part of the team going forward makes sense. Just no projects like Baerschi. Someone like Barzal, or Mcleod,or Vrana someone like that makes sense.

The cost would out-weigh the benefit. It's time to think longer term.

You assume JB is going to make the same mistake again. 4.6 for a guy who puts up 10 points a year is a way over payment. At least Tanev who is better then Guds has put up 20. Back to the Dorsett type player that skill set is needed but not worth a contract over someone who can put up 10 more points.
- manvanfan

What are with people and stupidly thinking that a defenseman is only worth something if they score? Beyond stupid. Players like Keith, Doughty, etc who can do it all are rare. and worth a poop ton on their contracts, you can only have 1 MAYBE 2 on your team. Gudbranson is having a little trouble doing 80% of the defensive work between him and Hutton, but that can be normal adjustment. He is still a very valuable DEFENDER that will be worth a decent contract around 4-4.5.

I dont think JB will have much of a choice though, the comparables are out there for non-point producing top-4 defenseman: Tanev ($4.45), Emelin ($4.1), Hjalmarsson ($4.1), Jonathon Ericsson ($4.25), all of those guys are older and produced in the same 10-20 range. Gudbranson's agent would likely point to his age and say he could still improve his offensive totals into the same range. I also dont see JB as a tough negotiator

EDIT: Another, Orpik in Washington makes $5m and barely produces. If JB is patient, he could wait and see what Alzner gets on the open market and leverage that as a comparable, but I cant see that keeping the price down

HOw is that not longer term? trading for a 19/20 y/o that is developing as a top 6 forward or top 4 defender? Getting a 1st in the 15-30 range is the bigger crap shoot. That player you draft is less of a sure thing. I know you have a hard on for only acquiring draft picks. But getting young players developing well can often be better than a late 1st/early 2nd.

Well for one, who's giving up a good young developing player for less than a prospect and a 1st round pick? How does that help long term unless you get a 19/20 kid that's proven to be ready, and then the cost just goes up.

Perhaps name a kid that's worth going after and we can debate the point but as of right now, if you're getting a 19 year old or a 20 year old why don't you just pick an 18 year old, keep your prospect, and develop them yourself?

I think Willie has the team on a pretty good path. I don't really want a coach to come in and get us to 22nd overall.

That trade would likely be tanev. And we would be going after a barzal, vrana, strome, etc type player. Tanev would easily get you a player developing in a positive manor from a team looking to win now and may not have room for this player in the next 2 years. Like Washington with Vrana. or Anaheim with Jones. NYI with Colle or barzal would be one, but with Hamonic etc out they are having a trash year, and I see them likely trading tavares at TDL if they think they might not resign him.

Is changing out the coach going to get us to the playoffs? I doubt it considering we have the worst goal differential in the league.

I'm thinking if they return sub .500 on the road trip that WD is most likely done.

He doesn't have much to work with, I'll give him that, however, his decisions leave a lot of heads shaking.

They're playing a trap system and they still have the worst goal differential in the league.

I agree that Tanev is probably the ONE player they have that could bring you a young prospect. Considering all the NTC & NMC's. Other than that I don't see anyone who could bring that kind to of return. Then you're getting into our prospects and draft picks and that's a non-starter for a bottom of the league team IMO.

Amazingly, that might be stopping us from reaching our true garbage potential.

I don't think WD is much of an NHL coach but this roster is pretty awful.
