Amazingly, that might be stopping us from reaching our true garbage potential.
I don't think WD is much of an NHL coach but this roster is pretty awful. - golfingsince

I agree that Tanev is probably the ONE player they have that could bring you a young prospect. Other than that I don't see anyone who could bring that kind to of return. Then you're getting into our prospects and draft picks and that's a non-starter for a bottom of the league team IMO. - LeftCoaster
Any player but Tanev should be picks. 100%. But Tanev should only go for a young,NHL ready or near NHL ready player that is trending as a future top 6 with potential top 3. Picks should only be a throw in to make it fair. Vrana + 2nd(or 3rd) for Tanev or something to that effect. |

I dont think JB will have much of a choice though, the comparables are out there for non-point producing top-4 defenseman: Tanev ($4.45), Emelin ($4.1), Hjalmarsson ($4.1), Jonathon Ericsson ($4.25), all of those guys are older and produced in the same 10-20 range. Gudbranson's agent would likely point to his age and say he could still improve his offensive totals into the same range. I also dont see JB as a tough negotiator
EDIT: Another, Orpik in Washington makes $5m and barely produces. If JB is patient, he could wait and see what Alzner gets on the open market and leverage that as a comparable, but I cant see that keeping the price down - WhiteLie
Emelin, Ericsson have both been on trade blocks because they are overpaid. All of those guys you listed have a ppg of .20 given or take a .01.
Guds is at .14. Most of those players have a cup ring.
why do you think Florida was like bye. |

Ok....I'm onboard, you're right, Tanev could bring that kind of return.
I was thinking that you/others wanted to use picks and prospects, I'm not in favour of that!
When you have an excess of prospects at one position, ok then you make moves to shore up your team like Murray did in Buffalo. |

I don't drive buses, especially a hysteria bus....stay the course and draft and develop. If Benning trades anymore picks or prospects though...all bets are off!
I'll flip out |

I'm not disagreeing they are overpaid, I am just pointing out that the precedent has been set, and I dont see JB as the strong negotiator to break trend on this.
Side note, I think cup rings are irrelevant and Florida had depth on D and many big forward contracts to sign, combine those with the expectation of giving Gudbranson a raise, is why he needed to be dealt. |

TL reiterated again they're sticking with the plan. I don't think JB makes any moves, unless that perfect deal (in his mind) falls on his lap. Truth is, we're a crap team, the wolves are circling. Status quo. |

In 4 years, when we have the core pieces to compete, sure trade some. But until then we need to hoard them. maybe add a few more. |

if you traded Tanev for that JB would never get a job in the nhl again. An established NHL top 4 D for a guy who no one knows can even make it in the NHL and a 2nd. Yet Seth Jones gets you a 70 point NHL center and Adam Larson gets you a 70 points NHL left winger. |

Don't see much point in firing him with this god awful team. There isn't a coach on this planet that can get this team a winning record. |

This is the NHL not the KHL. The team needs EG. I am sick of watching the team get smashed around the rink |

The precedent has got a lot of teams into cap troubles. At some point the trend has to be broken. GMs do learn from their mistakes. |

Jones and Larsen are not incredibly worse defensively than Tanev and both better offensively. With room to grow. Tanev likely never becomes more than he is. Vrana is a top 25 prospect in the NHL and playing very well in the AHL this year. He will be NHL ready soon, likely next season. Looks MUCH better than Baerschi. But that was just an example. Who knows what the deal would look like. Vrana + 1st, dif team dif player? who knows. |

True, but Gudbranson at least has the benefit of being only 24 and potentially improve. Florida expected him to get a raise that they could not afford, thus dealt him, Vancouver will give him the raise. Your contract offer was 100k extra per year over 6 years, I am sure Florida would've done that deal if that was plausible |

I think I would interview everyone extensively and keep those that had a common vision. |

Since he is an RFA don't we have to give him a min of 10% raise? so 3.86m being min AAV? |

Van paid a 2nd for baertschi who was pretty much a ppg AHL player. Really with the cap now a days, anyone who can't break into an NHL roster on a ELC probably isn't worth a 1st anymore. |
