Actually? Or just a guess? - BetterCallSaul
Well unless were landing Gio or Brodie I don't see where the shutdown defensemen comes from.
Jokipakka is a big presence and I think Leivo is a valued commodity. And with Corrado able to replace the lost depth in Jokipakka I think it's a low risk trade.
He could be a Polak replacement just younger.
Id add Hunwick or Marincin but I think Leivo would have to turn into Brown to keep them interested.
Jokipakka could slot in anywhere from 5-7 and a clear upgrade over whatever it is that we have going on.
I mean I'd love for Brodie to come back our way but scared of the costs at this point. |

this reminds me of some posters on here (not going to name names) saying that Marner had "girl-like handgrip strength" (combine results) and that was a proof he should not be on the team this year since too weak (still). |

May I ask is dougie Hamilton really worth the money he's getting? I'm asking cuz I don't know. I'd hate to see leafs give kadri away in deal for Hamilton. Wouldn't we(leafs). Be better off riding out season and letting more contracts come off the books plus expansion will serve up a player to Vegas and then and only then hope to sign free agent(s)? Please submit your opinions and thank you for your input. |

I would assume any trade the management decides on would factor in the expansion draft and who it leaves exposed vs. who is protected. |

No. Acquiring core assets in FA is something that is so rarely done - and so rarely works out for the Leafs - that they should avoid it at all costs.
The thing with the Leafs is that the prospect pool is front loaded. Beyond Neilson and Dermott (who both may be 2 or more years away), its woefully thin on the back end.
Adding a top 4 defenseman via trade is something that is worth doing, even if it costs a forward we don't want to lose. The Leafs are far more easily able to replace that from within, and it's crystal clear that the defense needs some bolstering.
The suggestion you make that does make a lot of sense is the one where they wait for the expansion draft to be over before seeking out a trade. As it is, they have to protect Rielly, Gardiner, Carrick and possibly Zaitsev (who may or may not be safe under the 1st/2nd year pro rules - not sure). Acquiring Hamilton (for example) means they have to expose one of those 4, likely Gardiner or Carrick, even if they do the 4 forwards, 4 dman and one goalie option.
I'm glad brighter hockey minds than I have to make those decisions |

What I don't get is if Hamilton is a big, young, 1st round, right handed shooting Dman on a good contract, why would Calgary trade him? |
