Giroux, and Voracek to a lesser extent, have years of producing and carrying the team offensively. Despite their recent slumps, they're both still among the top 25 or so in scoring, and Voracek had a very strong game against the Flames.
Schenn has been a wildly inconsistent player for 5 seasons now. Up and down, over and again. He's gotten prime usage on scoring lines and on the powerplay. He signed a new contract that makes him the 3rd highest paid forward, and this season has been more of the same, up and down play.
There's a reasonable expectation that both Giroux and Voracek will come around and start producing again at high levels. There's no reason to suspect Schenn will be anything other than the streaky, inconsistent guy he has been for 5 seasons.
That's why people bring up Schenn in a negative light. No, he's not the only or biggest issue. But when Giroux and Voracek start producing again, does Schenn find consistency? That's why people give a break to Giroux or Voracek. They have earned it because they have done it for years with their play.
The only thing Schenn has done is shown flashes and had his level of play go up and down like a see saw. Where Giroux and Voracek spent years driving play and creating offense, Schenn was more often a passenger. Need to make a bigger impact with his new contract.

It doesn't matter what Giroux and Voracek have done a year ago or five years ago. They are paid and expected to carry the team every night right now and every game moving forward.
This is just an example of who gets a free pass and who doesn't. Perfect example, Couturier has been a great defensive forward who can chip in offensively. He hasn't done this at all this year but it's fine because he has in years past. The Konecny fight against the Rangers that cost us a PP. Even though he has no history in the NHL, he's a young and exciting fresh face. The fight is a news story. The kid is beloved. I've seen players dating back to the enforcer days do the same thing and fans have bashed the likes of a Riley Cote for doing the same thing.
There is a lot of double standard here. I'm just happy Dale Weise finally got that monkey off his back so we can put the focus of blame elsewhere.
