If the Sens were to offer you Bobby Ryan, straight up for David Clarkson, what would you do? - prock
Assess are cap situation in the long run , who will need to be renewed long term and who can I trade to clear up some space. Bearing in mind it's not a surety I can move those said players, Ryan at 7 mil per is playing it close to chest and it would just put the team in cap hell for the remainder of the of his tenure , also bearing in mind Ryan can decline and will not be producing to the point/money ratio of his salary in later years.
Having Clarkson with an insured contract (meaning it's not ownership money) and on LITR , is good for ownership and gives more wiggled room for the gm. |

I take that to mean, you would rather keep Clarkson, and his contract. I appreciate your input. |

here is my question. if you were forced to take one player back on a trade, between bobby ryan and David clarkson, which would it be?
do you take bobby ryan, on pace for about 30 points this year, at 7.25m I think. or David clarkson, 5.25m in salary, no cap hit because he's on LTIR.
which do you take?
Looking forward to other fan's take on this matter. - prock

What are you doing on the internet? Shouldn't you be busy getting down to Keybank Center to boo your own players on their home ice? You know, the players who signed contracts in good faith for a team that decided to intentionally make them lose? |

Based on real life facts yes,
In a fictional world where the sens are willing to take on Hartnell's and Dubinky's contracts and no significant playes is coming of their ELC , then no I would trade clarkson's contract for Ryan.... |

As a fan, or as a GM? - jmatchett383
As a fan, or GM. why would it be different? Both want their team to do the best it can.
Unless you mean, as an owner, and one of the owners that wants to save money, instead of win? |

If I'm a fan, I'd rather have Bobby Ryan because, despite his contract, he's more fun to watch than a guy who's on LTIR.
As a GM, it depends. How close are we to the cap ceiling without Clarkson? What unrestricted free agents are currently available, and how much do they want?
I think the question needs to be a bit more specific. Are you asking: "Would you rather have Bobby Ryan at $7.25M or $5.25M in cap space?" If so, that's a different story. |

I think what you're asking is, would you be allowed to spend that cap space elsewhere? i.e. does that factor in my scenario? My answer is, yes, you'd be free to spend that money in free agency if you prefer to. |

LTIR doesn't buy you anything if you don't exceed the cap. So if my team is at the exact maximum of the cap ceiling with Clarkson and I have that $5.25M in cap space, that would be nice. But still, LTIR doesn't come into play until the season begins, at which point all UFAs are signed for the most part. Plus, I'd have to be at the cap, THEN use the LTIR, and THEN I could add $5.25M. It's not like you're just handed a free $5.25M to start the year. You'd have to get creative in waiving players to get at or just under the cap, LTIR him, and then recall them.
But if it's simply Bobby Ryan at his cap hit or a free $5.25M, I'll take the free $5.25M.

Well, sort of. If you're trying to say you can't use the space that Clarkson occupies, until the season, that's not quite true. You can sign up to 10% over the cap. So, at $70M, you can sign the space that Clarkson would occupy, knowing full well you're not exceeding the cap, because once the season starts, you're right back down by the $5.25 salary of Clarkson.
There is no maneouvering required for these guys, really. You just can't sign an extra $10M in guys. You have to stay under the cap, even in offseason. Not a huge inconvenience. Most don't anyway. |

#11 Mark Streit
He will put up some serious points as a Power Play specialist and has shown he can play in clutch situations, but the Flyers have players coming to fill his spot and could be looking to move him if they fall out of the playoffs, or are even on the verge of being out. There are some teams who really like Mark a lot.

Yes, you can be 10% over during the summer, but you have to be compliant to start the season. So unless you have $5.25M of contracts and you want to carry which don't require waivers, you'll have a hard time being complaint if you use that money in the offseason. This happened to the Flyers, where they had to do an on-paper move and send Brayden Schenn and Sean Couturier to the AHL for a day (they literally had to drive there) to be compliant to LTIR Pronger for maximum savings.
So yes, you could theoretically sign players where your opening night roster, including Clarkson, exceeds the cap ceiling by exactly his cap hit. That way, you get the full LTIR savings (as opposed by a partial savings). Now, that being said, you are operating at the cap limit even with that LTIR, so any players you want to call up won't be able to do so unless you free money up by sending players down, trading players, or adding more players to LTIR. Unless you're at exactly the ceiling, which is almost impossible, you won't have the full $5.25M to spend. |

So, the net effect is, at worst, you give some guys a free trip to your farm team for the afternoon?
okay.
Admittedly, I didn't know there was a single day, at the beginning of the season, that it mattered.

It doesn't matter until you exceed the cap. If you don't exceed the cap, there's no gain to using LTIR, and it actually hurts you to use it later on in the season. You can use LTIR at any day, but for guys like Pronger and Savard, you know you're gonna use it from day 1 on.
The net effect is, at worst, you lose a player to waivers to get under the cap. |

Which is highly doubtful. Most teams have a few million dollars in players that are waiver eligible they can send down for the day. |
