Edler is a solid top 4 Dman in the NHL I think we all know that, probably not top pairing material anymore but a good 2nd pairing guy. As far as I know that's good enough in todays trade market to bring in the top 6 scoring winger JB has been looking for.
Do I think it will happen? No.
Do I think it should happen? Only once we get further proof that we can manage without him for more than a couple games. - NorthNuck
I think Edler is a number 4 on a good team but he has a NTC. IF he waives, we will have a list of 3-4 teams if we are lucky. Hamhuis gave a list of 2. We aren't getting a young top 6 winger. If he didn't have a NTC, perhaps. |

Since he has been injury prone we haven't really shown that we benefit from having Edler in the lineup ...other than munching large minutes and becoming a defensive liability because of thoseminutes..
Edler would be top 4 middle-pairing on maybe the bottom 20 teams in the league but where he sits right now based on his recent play he would be lucky to crack the top 4 on any of the top 10 clubs.
The best that Edler would bring now would be a 'top 9' scoring winger most likely from the 2nd round. |

I agree, we are overrating Edler. A useful player on any team but he isn't a top line guy anymore. I'd rather chase a second 1st round pick for him |

Much like Hamhuis...I don't believe Edler is worth a first anymore. |

Edler is definitely better than Hamhuis. Hamhuis has been a healthy scratch in Dallas a few games If a top team receives an injury to their top 4 prior to the deadline we could get a decent return. A bit of luck will be required. |

That luck being Edler waives. Face it, he will be a Canuck until his contract ends and then walk. He should know by now we will not extend him. |

He is a soft spoken homebody. He likes Vancouver, the country club atmosphere and the Sedins. It's unlikely he is traded. |

Dont even get me started. A First?!?! A second feels like a pipe dream right now.
Defensive liability, Has three god damn points. and only had one until last week.
Ever since he injured two players, He's too afraid to use his body. Has played one 82 game season over his entire career. His angles and intelligience are slipping. He's never been an amazing skater, and looks like he's taken a step back in that department aswell.
A First?!?! I'd be dancing with a second. He was worth a first maybe 2 years ago. But his value is shot. Atleast that is If other teams scouts are actually doing their jobs correctly prior to the TD. |

TDL last year of his contract he might, though by then maybe a 3rd. If he won't leave Vancouver he will retire at the end of the contract. He may be willing to waive to see if he likes another town to re-sign his last contract, or just retire a Canuck in a few years. |

ya pretty much all true. As is the case with most of our past aging players we waited too long to move him and now would be lucky to get a 2nd. |

I think that's all a little excessive.
He's been playing on one of the lowest scoring teams in the league with predominantly, a kid with 14 games of NHL experience.
The guy is still a 25 minute a night, defensively sound transition guy...He's still got 2-3 prime years left in the tank at (today's rate) a very reasonable price. Let's not forget that he had 6 goals and 20 points in only 52 games just last season. If Benning cannot even squeeze out a first for the guy then what's the point of trading him at all?
The guy is a top 4 Dman on any team in the league, if not a decent top 2 complimentary player. |

Not sure which Edler you've been watching this year but were all entitled to our own opinions.

Edler is, no matter what, currently an upgrade on every single teams #4 and most teams #3 guy. That still has value. |

Indeed we are and as such, I'm simply voicing my own opinion that shipping off a consistent top 4 D-man for anything less then market value, based merely on his play over the course of 21 games is bad...(wait for it).....
asset management
Assuming he is willing to waive, which he undoubtedly isn't, i think there would be quite a few teams that would be interested and perhaps, we could poach a young asset.
For instance, i think COL, DET, ARZ and Dallas would be very open to his services. |

What if the market is a 2nd round pick? Do you trade him? Or keep and try again at next years deadline?
Edit. I think is worth a 2nd and a 3rd, perhaps a late 1st if the timing aligns and he doesn't pull a Hamhuis/ Kesler. |

A late 1st or a good prospect would be my baseline. If the market says less than that, keep him. You cant try again at next years deadline he has a full no move clause that kicks in |

Edler provides more value to this team then any second or third round pick ever could, especially considering the failure rate of many of those picks, additionally, this draft has been noted to have a significant drop off outside the top 20.
The market for established top 4 defenseman, of which there is zero doubt that Edler is, has always been notoriously high.
My view is that there's no sound reasoning behind moving a player simply for the sake of making a move. If the value is not there, stay the course. Edler's ability to eat minutes, transition play and most importantly, aid in shielding/developing a very young D-core is an asset that cannot be readily replaced.
Edit: the play of the young guys on the back-end has been impressive, but i personally do not believe they are ready or even willing to carry the load themselves. Without the likes of Edler and Tanev, i would have been surprised if management opted to even introduce Hutton and Stetcher to the NHL as early as they did. |

Regarding the draft, I've been seeing reports that it has a lot more depth in the mid rounds compared to last year. If we are lucky, Edler agrees to waive and gives us 3/4 teams. His NTC hurts our return |
