Here is Dreger talking about how highly sought after the job was.

The point is the prospects had value. What Murray did with that Value is on him.
He turned Grigo/Zads and Compher into a really good player. He had the currency to do so because of the assets we had.
He turned our default #1 D (Myers) who had value, along with the other pieces into the Kane trade, he was able to make that trade because of the assets he had available to him.
Same with the Fasching trade. He was ABLE to trade 2 extra 2nd round picks plus McNabb for a prospect he coveted, because we had a boatload of assets.
Same reason we could toss a 3rd for Vesey, because we had assets.
Same with Gorges. Same with Lehner.
He inherited assets to craft this team as he saw fit. It's a GM's wet dream - sbroads24
I see your point, in terms of quantity there was a lot there for sure.
My point is that quality wasn't there. My jaw hit the floor the day TM didn't take a "massive overpayment" for Tyler Myers. Why? Because I valued him too much, as we all do our prospects, other GM's see the real value. We had quantity but I didn't see the quality.
Again, I ask, has that top three prospect pool actually turned into anything of REAL value? As in performance for their respective clubs? I'm unaware of it yet.
Remember perceived and real value are two totally different things.
I love Hockeysfuture.com's prospect pool ranking, yes they had us really high.
Based on everything I see right now....they...and I were dead wrong.
Hindsight I believe bears this out.

He noted “the cupboard is not bare.” The Sabres have nine first- and second-round picks over the next two years, a stable of choice prospects, salary cap space and ownership willing to spend freely in all facets.
“A blank slate,” Murray said. “Money to spend when it’s the right time here to be a cap team. This was just an attractive, attractive time for me to branch out on my own and put my stamp on the game of hockey.” - sbroads24

Yes, coaches job. As in this organization when Murray took over was seen as an up and coming franchise.

Most people myself included believe the Sabres prospects are going to all turn out and be good to great players, but the facts are what we see them worth real NHL GM's know the real value of them.
There was not one player in the Sabres prospect pool not named Risto, Reinhart or Eichel that another GM HAD to have. |

Yes, Ryan O'Reilly, Evander Kane, Robin Lehner, Zach Bogosian, Josh Gorges, Hudson Fasching. All the guys he was able to add because of the currency he had |

So you can shift it from GM talk to coaches talk? Way to avoid the topic...
You even said it was a GM's wet dream with all of the currency that was here but not one non first time GM wanted the job. You can talk coaches all you want but you can't find me a link where a proven NHL GM wanted this job because they knew it was a mess.
Also this coach talk was after Reinhart and Eichel were drafted after Nolan was fired almost 18 months after Murray was hired here. |

Since our pool area here at work is closed for the season, we are pruning all of our palm trees. So I have my guys up in the lift pruning the trees and the whole area blocked off, a lady moves the barricades and walks right in the area where we are working and I tell her " excuse me but you can't walk in this area" and she says to me " why not? " and I said " really are you serious? you can't see we are cutting palm trees and what's falling on the ground " . She walked through anyway and called me an IDIOT. |

Maybe because they were searching for a GM mid-season. Why would we want a re-tread GM? Who wasn't throwing their hat in the ring that would have interested us? |

You're also bringing up a coaching search 18 months after the GM was hired and after Reinhart was drafted and Eichel was being drafted.
Again a GM's wet dream in your mind but respected hockey GM's wanted nothing to do with it unless they were looking for their first GM job...

On being invited to visit Pakistan by the prime minister, Mr. Trump said that he would love to come to a fantastic country, fantastic place of fantastic people. Please convey to the Pakistani people that they are amazing and all Pakistanis I have known are exceptional people, said Mr. Donald Trump.

Ok, I can see your point pertaining to quantity. I get that.
But here is mine, based on the quality of the players and pick he inherited, had he not made those moves, the prospects were looking bleak.
I guess what I'm trying to say, is that none of those players are the types of players you surround Eichel with and viola you have your Stanley Cup.
As Homie pointed out, with the Hawks they had two all star defensemen, a solid goalie (with the next replacement goalie in the minors) and then added two all star forwards with plenty of supporting cast. I'm saying THAT foundation wasn't there for the Sabres. Based on quantity I can concede the team in a mess, though this is the spirit of what I meant.
With the Penguins they drafted top five a bunch of times and then surrounded those with supporting cast.
The Sabres are just now correcting the fact they didn't have enough talent when Murray took over to surround Eichel with. They're getting there.
Does that make more sense? |
