And again, better team implies we get better players, including D men, that will take minutes from Ristolainen.
- sbroads24

Not as many as you think. He's always going to get top PP time unless we get Karlsson, Burns, OEL, Subban... He'd still be a 23:00+ guy on a good Sabres team.

No, the guys comparable to Risto are

Morgan Reilly
Seth Jones
Olli Maatta
Aaron Ekblad
Darnell Nurse
Oscar Klefbom
Colton Parayko
Jacob Trouba

Those are Risto's peers. Not Drew Freaking Doughty

- sbroads24

No one is saying Doughty is Risto's peer.

Klefbom has a whole 8 points on the high flying Oilers. Nurse has 5. Come on man.

Yea, they are closer to him than Risto is to a top 5 D man. And Kelfbom is really, really good. Nurse is not. But he was picked right before Risto, so I listed him

Again with the false equivalencies. Nurse is dogsh¡t compared to Risto, all he can do is hit and jump guys so far. Klefbom is good, but "really, really good" is a major stretch and I like the guy I drafted him in my super deep league. Nurse couldn't even make the hapless Oilers until last year where he's got a whopping 15 points in 96 games. Nurse doesn't even crack the top 120. Klefbom is maybe in the 50-80 range, so yeah maybe Klefbom at 65 is closer to Risto than Risto is to top 5, but not by much. It's probably right in the middle. Plus he's got 2 years on Risto.

Edit: Or, to put it simply. Jesus Christ.

Yet if you asked anyone in Edmonton who'd they rather have, you'd get a resounding Klefbom answer.

One is a career 33 PPG player, the other is a .35 PPG player. I don't see the giant disparity other than Klefbom hasn't been asked to play 26 minutes a night

Not sure what Oiler fans you know but the ones I do couldn't trade Klefbom for Risto fast enough.

Klefbom spent a huge chunk of 2 seasons injured.

Games played him and ristolainen are almost even

This is klefboms first chance at sustained development and he's taking the ball and running with it.
An unequivocal top pairing two way guy already, with room to grow into something much more. And he's now played a few nights at over 24 mins played.

I'd give the edge to ristolainen today as he's proven he can provide offence much more than oscar has at this point.
but again- he's been injured a lot (health is a factor too though and probably another mark in ristos favour )
as far as breaking the forecheck they've both got work to do, but I'd definitely give the edge to oscar for moving the puck into transition

I don't think the gap is as big as you might believe. And that's not a slag on Rasmus one bit. He's a real good defender. It's more a positive remark about klefbom

As far as nurse- agreed he's nowhere near either. But after a brutal rookie season where he got thrown to the Wolves, he's thriving in a sheltered role and really developing his game. Got a ton of tools, but still erratic. But yeah, not in risto or oscars class at this point

Just my two cents that wasn't asked for

In 3 games with Eichel dressed, 2 of which with McCabe instead of Gorges, Ristolainen is still a drag on possession.

It's starting to look like he isn't all he's cracked up to be IMO.

NHL.com listed 6 players who would be analytics all stars through 20 games last week. I'll try to find it. Guess who was one of them? Risto. Doh!!

Not nearly enough vitriol, bro. Not once did you mention how much better McDavid is than Eichel either. So very disappointed...

I like Klefbom, like I said before I drafted him in my deep league, but I thought he was supposed to be this offensive guy? Maybe I've got it wrong, it's not like I watch a ton of Oilers games. Risto has improved in his own end, but still needs refinement. He's a dynamo on the PP and just 5v5 when he joins the rush he makes things happen that might not make it to the score sheet. But as far as Klef goes he's only got 8 points and the Oilers have scored 30 more goals than the Sabres(Risto has 12P). I expected more from him. Again, maybe I'm way off base about him, but they're both young players yet, and maybe when Klef gets asked to do as much as Risto does we can make a more fair comparison, but as of now I really don't believe it's that close.

Johnson - broken fibula in Colorado. Out until late January, at least. Time for them to break up the core, and for us to go get a left winger
